I agree with Harry and his friend that most if not all the ships in VO look like toys. Weather or not you think this is a bad thing is up to you. As for me, however, I am not a huge fan of the looks of the ships in this game. The rest of the game though is great looking, from the staions to the asteroids.
I know it is an easy thing to say that we should update the look and build of the ships in VO rather than the reality of going into all of the code and working in new models and such but I think that is one of the few things that could take Vendetta further. The game play is great for the most part, there is fun stuff to do and lots to explore. With upcoming additions of the new hive elements as well as the mission engine and cap ships this game will have lots of content to keep us busy. I think that the next major improvement to VO after all of this new content has been added should be a rework of not only the current designs of all of the ships in the game but also the introduction of even more ships and equipment (guns and such) to the game. I know this is easier said than done but with games like X2: The threat out Vendetta is begining to show its age graphicly speaking. The abillity to customize your ship beyond just changing the color, batteries, and guns to allow a little more variation between players might attract more players ontop of a graphic change.
This is all just suggestion and I know that most of what I have said here is more than likely never going to happen with this game ever I just think that this game needs more attention from the gaming community and the only way to do that in this world is to add some flash to Vendetta's thunder if you know what I mean.

New ship + Textured. I've also got a few others in the works being textured right now, including the Deimos and Nephillim.
Thank you Krash for backing me up there. I personally find the VO vs FS picture ( http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/Dimpfinator/VOvsFS.jpg ) hilarious because it puts this into such stark contrast.
Ah well. The devs will have to update ship designs at some point, no matter how great it becomes in terms of gameplay.

What is FS?
FreeSpace.
Looks good Harry. Thats quite the model collection you're creating.
I'm gonna have something up here as soon as I can get Maya to stop crashing every time I try and apply a material to a model.

FS is Freespace. FS2 is Freespace 2, but I opted to use shots of models from Freespace 1, which is now about 7 years old, which is why this is so funny.
While I do agree that the lower level models in this game are pretty rudimentary, like the centurion, hornet, rag, etc... I think that the valk, prom, and maud are really cool designs.
/me holds up a model of the maud to a pizzacutter...
Back. Harry... Keep up the good work. Im leaving VO until some Updates happen.
Doesn't look like you'll be gone long...

All right, finally. Texturing is a bitch! And this is just a quick and dirty texture at that. No Specular map, no bumb, no diffuese, no nuthin!
Anyway, this be the Itani Border Guardian Mark II. I designed it to be able to fly/fight in atmospheric conditions,. I think the Centurion was meant for that.
Things that I know need work: The weapons. The texture. I'm gonna be working on those two things.
Feel free to comment on those two things, I just wanted to point out that I know they need work.
Oh, and its poly count is 896.

Alright, i didn't spend much time at all on the UV Mapping the textures of this, and i'm a noob at it, so they sux. It's the concept i'm going after. This isn't even as detailed as i would like it. I need encouragement before i make it better. The design i'm submitting is my first ship in wings3d. I've never touched wings3d before this.

Snax: I'm going to suggest some stuff with your 'designed for atmospheric flight' in mind. My first comment is on the thin fuselage, which drops away from the back of the cockpit very quickly, which is something that would create TONS of drag. So, my solution would be to make the ship itself a bit longer, and make the fuselage much thicker. Also, something about the canards are bugging me. I think that it needs some more polys (in the form of a beveled edge) to 'fit' with the general concept of the ship (which is rounder overall.). I would also add another face at the peak of the engines, to help it look smoother. I also don't really think the intakes (which are angled forward) really look all that great currently. Maybe it's just a texturing thing...
Overall, it's a good job. I won't go off on my 'proportions' rant again either. :P

In case anyone didn't see my "keep up the good work, I'm not ignoring you, but making ships isn't as trivial as making an interesting potential model" reply, see here:

Thanks for the feedback Harry. And thanks for not just giving me the ol', "oh, thats wicked dude!" Bugs the hell outta me!
I agree on almost all of the points that you brought up, I have to admit it wans't the best thought through design. Basically I was using it as a jump-in point to get back into modelling.
That said, I'm gonna leave the IBG Mark II on the burners for a while, and go on to the next one.... Ineubis Bounty Collector.
And thank Inc. Read the post, and I've actually read some of Waylons tutorials in the past. He has one on 3dtotal that he actually uses a Rag as an example.
EDIT: Oh, tis the same one. Cool!

Yeah, it does. Ah well..
And Incarnate, thanks for responding. I've been working on texturing ships, and I've got more than a few in the works as it is right now. However, if we could get a list of the poly count for various ships ingame, that would help the fans create content in the long run, because it's easier to modify the mesh and then texture, than to model, texture, and re-edit the mesh, and have to fix the textures later.
And Snax, I'm lookin' forward to some other fans submitting ship designs. :)

It's a good start, I think it needs a bit more detail. I'm not sure exactly what the spikes are for in the middle. But keep submitting so Harry has someone to compete with! =)

Why do some of these ship designs have engine intakes?
