Looks fammiliar. Anyone say... X-Wing?
Off-Topic - I think we have found ourselves a new dev! It twould be great if they entered just *1* of these ships. Instead of ignoring this topic. *Me is thinking about killing Incarnate for not entering any of these fin ships*

omg it IS an x-wing!
EDIT: i just did a google image search for "sea creatures" and found many interesting things there that could be adapted to look like ships.

Actually, it looks to me more like a fighter from Babylon 5.
For example, these:

who? me? please post them... I need inspiration... Creative juices aren't flowing...
It's not an X-Wing. Anyone who confuses the Raubvogel with an X-Wing needs to check out some shots of the X-wing.

Just because it has 4 wings doesn't mean that it's an X Wing. _
And yes, while it does bear some resemblance to a Starfury of Bablyon 5 (because of it's 4 wings, cockpit, and short fuselage), it was designed with none of these things in mind.

ZOMG!!! This has four wings!!! It's an X-WING!!! I can't believe that the Germans have already built a working model!

deep sea fish.... ooooooo

Dude, the google search only gives you half of what's out there. Look at this:

BE WARNED, these fish are scarier than something out of Alienspartially because they're real. If you hate nasty/freaky looking sea creatures that might provoke unpleasant dreams in the middle of the night, reconsider clicking that link.
That said, this is some killer inspiration for ship modelling. Remember though, this is where we get away from the blocky, military look and into the freaky, organic James Cameron's Abyss look. Still, just imagine some of these critters made into ships for the different races. I could imagine #5, from the top downthat sleek, black thingas an itani ship (or something like an itani ship).
/me continues to work with Carrara trial version
[EDIT] There are lots of pictures, not just at the first post. Keep scrolling down, there are at least 25 shots of weird critters.

I've got a great idea for a new ship... Course, I don't have the time to model it right now, but I'll be sketching it up during class :)
OK, here is my attempt at an Itani Capital Ship. I gave up on trying to teach myself 3d apps. There are docking entries and exits because the Itani are supposed to be much more reliant on fighters. I also figured that the capships should look like their respective fighter designs. I've still got a UIT ship floating around in my sleep-deprived head.
Please be gentle.

Well, You didnt have to rub it in "Hairy". Ok it LOOKS like an X-Wing though.
Pirate_n00b: we weren't trying to insult you. People are just too quick to judge on past ship designs that they don't notice that the new one is radically different.
I've got a couple of ideas brewing, but for now, I'm just going to post a couple variations on earlier designs. The Zephyrus got a bit of a tweak:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/Dimpfinator/Sekhmet.jpg
And I thougth that the Astaroth might fit nicely as a capital ship. I stuck some turrets on there, I think it could work OK.

Currently less than 1000 polys.
As for what Phaserlight was talking about earlier, using this ship as an example, while you can get some cool shapes by mirroring it, they generally allow other fighters to get in unprotected areas, and just blast away indefinitely. I'll post some other ideas later though...

I like the idea you had for an Itani cap ship. I was playing along the same lines of using the valk as inspiration. Mine is similar in longish shape and scale to the current cap, but with the rounded forms that you used. I can't get away from the fact that my version looks like a hotdog in a bun. Also I think that the rounded surfaces put a strain on the ol' graphics card in actual gameplay.

well, the curves just mean you need more polygons to describe the same surface, which of course adds to the total polycount of the model, and that raises the requirements of the graphics card.
I figured since the Valkrie was curved, it was ok to do it with a cap ship.
yea, but the valkyrie is much smaller. Because it's smaller, the polygons required to make a smooth surface are smaller, and so require less, etc.
Capital ships are large. If there aren't enough polygons to describe the curve, it looks "segmented," or basically, like a bunch of flat surfaces put together to look something resembling round. Usually looks pretty bad. So you need to increase the polygons to keep the roundness. I don't know how intelligable that was.

Well, it doesn't always look "bad", but it won't look round.
Well, Harry or someone else feel free to mess with it in a modeler then. I am horrible at those. Illustrator tested my patience as it is.
