Honestly, it looks like they have found an artist who they are happy with and can comply with all the specs that they need. I highly doubt that any player created ships will make it in game. I'm not trying to discourage or stop anyone from trying to make something good enough to go in game, I just don't see it happening. How many people can afford to buy 3DSMax and has the free time to make all the necessary textures. As Inc. has stated, the modeling is the easy part, it's everythig else that takes the time, and no one really wants to do that part.

But it's fun to make the models and see what everyone else thinks of them. If anything this is just a fan art thread and nothing more, so keep them coming. 8)

what program does everyone use to make these. And most importantly... is it free

Harry and I use Wings3d, which is indeed free.

I think someone said it would be a good Idea to start with concept art frist,

This is private work for a projest so nobody build a model based on it's look, but all it is, is a quick sketch of what I wanted, and I have texture notes I took down as I was drawing it. I kept closing my eyes and thinking about the detail and colors.

Just have a go at a quick sketch before you start futsing around in 3dsmax or wings3d.

quick design 4 min tops

Usually, I've already got an idea in my head, and as I model it, I modify it as I see fit. I incremement the filenames at points where I diverge onto tangents, and so on.

I would write more, but I'm stinkin' tired.

Well I kinda redid the previous ship, sleeked it down and made it look alot faster as I intend in the beginning, but wasnt quite able to capture

Took about maybe 10-12 minutes overall and made some real design changes.

For example the mouth is now closed with something, i'm not quite sure whether it's a metal plate or something special. I sleeked down the bottom to give it a sense of speed, at this point i'm not sure if i'm going to leave the hull open, but yet maybe the race that flys this ship uses very good and enhanced shields so maybe this wouldn't be a problem, I might do two designs here to catpure both the enclosed and open versions.

This is a fun thread! I don't know why Im just noticing it... Here are a couple ships I did 5 years ago for a game called Ernesto, done with booleans in Bryce 3 of all things:

They're low detail, because it was a top down 2d shooter. I've got some other high detail ships somewhere too... I've got some other designs as well that were never modeled. Maybe I'll dust off Lightwave 8 and have a go at some of them.

You should re-crack open the files and detail them alittle bit, make them show pieces for your portfolio if you have time.

Damn I feel outclassed. Everyone comes out with this top range really cool shit, and I'm sitting here gaping! I've been designing ships for 2 years and I donno half as much as you guys!

LOL, if your looking to learn detail then it would be a good idea to look for good concept art of spaceships. or just watch alot of star trek and star wars lol.

When I was in art school, the first thing they told us was space ships are not good portfolio pieces, because everyone does them. My portfolio is charcoal and a couple of realism renders, I never even put a ship into it. Maybe have to model one up though. I need to retrain my lightwave skills anyway, I'm terribly rusty...

Yes but in the art class im in the frist thing htey told me was that digital art wasnt art at all, now how messed up is that.
Jan 01, 2006 LordofBlades link
Don't worry about it, their just jealous of our talent. We can make OUR art fly around a blow stuff up, I'd like to see them do that!

The old Digital Work isn't Art argument is getting extremely tiring and old. "Digital" simply describes a medium/tool set. The art is in the concept, just like any other method. Its pure ignorance and conservatism that leads to the "digital art isn't art at all" statement. Tell your professors to pull their heads out of their oil pots and take a look around. Then point them in the direction of the closest retirement home.

is there any way to open a moth model in wings? I would like to sketch out a hauling idea, and want to base it on the moth...
Jan 06, 2006 Harry Seldon link
No. We don't have a 'moth model. If you want one, you'll have to make it yourself. That's what I did when making size comparison models...
Jan 06, 2006 Chikira link
Heres what you should do since you cant get ahold of the Moth file. *I dont know if this works in wings but it does in Maya* Take a side screenshot of the ship and then a front and back and bring them up in your 3d program, postion them until you get the right feel of depth and start to model based around that, It should give you an acurrate model of the Behemoth *besides textures and uv/reflections mapping*

I know you can do that in blender and they just release a new version that rocks!!
