The iPad

Might be cool as the core of a home stereo system, or a sort of smart home type setup.

Yeah, though because I don't want to combine the radio space and the upper vents/clock space, I'm starting to think that I'd have to put it into the top of the console lid, where the driver's right arm rests. Not sure how that would work as far as it being far enough forward to be easy to see and use.

I think the further you have to avert your line of sight from the direction you're going, the more dangerous it becomes if you want to use the computer while driving.

Why not make a contraption that holds the iPad but is unobtrusive when not holding it? Possibly something from naturally anodized aluminum, which yields a very nice, slightly dark grey.

Flush-Fit or Fuck It.

It should be possible to have both a flush fit and a turnable one, when needed.

Do you have friends who have access to and know how to use CNC machinery?

flush, turnable, cutting dashboard, sports car,

seriously you are raping this thing with your ideas tosh, but w/e its a british car so no matter what electrical and computerized shit you plug into it its going to break. In this case for the best.

Pey, there's nothing Lucas left in the engine bay, and there's nothing Lucas left in the boot. And once I'm done yanking out every single thing bewteen the driver's seat and the firewall (no more A/C system, no more Lucas blower fans, no more original heater system, no more original wiring, and upgraded grounds) . . . it will be both a much simpler car and a much more reliable one :P

But given the footprint of the iPad (too big for the dash), I may settle for integrating an iPod Touch or an iPhone into the current radio space. Not as great for maps, but it will look a shitload better and be in the right spot. I wish they made a double sized iPod Touch, it would be just the right size.

One thing I could do, and perhaps this is what Tosh was suggesting, is mount it in a tracked carrier such that it slides into and out of the dash on edge, and rotates up. I still don't like it: I want it to be a flat, usually dark, glass panel with the dash burl wood and leather flush with/covering the bezel of the screen. Otherwise it gets to look far too gimicky.

I do have a lot of airsmith friends who handle CNC work for custom paintball guns and accessories -- one of them is creating the adaptor I need for the V12 block to modern electric waterpump casing.

Real men do it all on a manual Monarch lathe.

And those of us paying for someone's time tell them to fucking program the mill and get off the clock.

Lecter, I did not mean to have it slide in, actually, but after looking at some XJS dashboards, I see what you mean when you say that the iPad's footprint is too big.

I actually meant a carrier that holds the iPad flush with the dash, but can let it slide out a bit (only about an inch), to allow rotation when needed. Press to release, press a second time to secure again.

And personally, I'd prefer a Schäublin to a Monarch... but that's because I'm Swiss.

If I didn't have the '82 with the in-dash analog clock, rather than the all-but-ubiquitous "trip computer" which was supposedly a major tech goodie back in '84 (who wants to see exactly how much gas they're burning per mile in a 2.5 ton V12 powered car?!), the foot print would be OK because that could go along with the radio and the current climate controls.

But I do and it cannot. First things first, though: stripping the interior down to bare metal before priming, painting, and putting in Damplifier products.

wait a second don't you live in the city? How exactly are you even going to enjoy this car in a sea of taxis
May 11, 2010 Dr. Lecter link
I usually take it upstate to go play in the Catskills, and back home to VA to play on Skyline drive/Blue Ridge parkway... though I'm cautious about that last run after totalling a grand am on a deer during 1L fall. But yeah, for as long as I'm in NYC it's just a toy car, not a daily driver. And anyone who takes a nice, low-slung car on NYC's horrible, two foot deep pothole riddled roads should be shot, taxis or no.

Agreed, trip computers are a waste of dashboard space. With some modern cars, they are at least incorporated into the gauges.

Bought 50 shares of AAPL today at $265.91/share. Let's see where it is at the end of the Firm's mandatory 60 hold period.

Good thinking. I bought some at the two year low (must be 3 year by now), ~85/share.

I think it was a good decision

I shorted it at ~$99/share >.< Thank Gods it was just in my Updown.com portfolio, but still.

Really, I should have taken out every cent to which I have access, including lines of credit, and bought a quarter mill worth when the iPhone first came out. Ah well.

Out of curiosity: Are you making progress with your JagPad?
