Oh my god it's so amazing
somehow i think apple could release their own brand of dog turd and some idiots would say its amazing.
If that turd is slick and smells nice and entertains me for hours on end, hell yeah I'd buy one.
But at least my iPad opinions are based on actually using the thing.
As are the opinions of the numerous converts from "Why do you need a big iPod?" to "NEED ONE"
(aka the 9+ people I've shown it to)

I need multitasking. This non-negotiable. The iWorks apps are robust enough that I'd give it a go as a lappy replacement, but I must have multitasking.

You need to take a serious look at some of the up-and-coming android devices

I received my Entourage Edge today, and so far I've been having fun with it. Android-based dual-screen, one touch one e-ink. The touch interface needs some work (it's nowhere near as smooth as any of Apple's touchscreen devices), and a lot of things don't work yet (the camera is supposed to be enabled in a future firmware update, among other things), but so far it looks like it's going to fulfill all the reasons why I bought it.
Reading papers on the e-ink display is excellent, and the annotation functionality is good so far. Multitasking seems to work fine, though you currently have to download apps from third-party sites (there is noise about Entourage setting up its own app Market, but it has yet to materialize). Running an IRC client in the background while doing whatever else I needed to at the time (browsing the web, looking through my library) worked fine, no interruption to the chat.
It's definitely nowhere near as polished as the iPad (I don't need to use one to know. Apple would never release a product this rough). It took some doing to get wireless set up at work, but it only took as much doing as some other linux distros, as the authentication protocols are more serious than WPA2 Personal. My iTouch picked that up automatically, but I had to set it up manually on the Edge, which required knowing exactly what to do (which I did from my previous experience). This is a product that won't "Just Work," but so far works well enough for me, and the extra functionality introduced by the e-ink display, along with Android's expandability, make it the device I'm happy to use.

Users say laying the iPad on a flat surface exacerbates the problem of not being able to connect to WiFi. Apple posted a Web page outlining troubleshooting tips for "occasional problems" that included weak Wi-Fi connections or not being able to find a signal.
The tips include moving closer to a Wi-Fi router or hot spot and making sure the Wi-Fi router is plugged in and the power is turned on.
I hope they offered you some mayo before they bent you over, Smittens.

Haha well I never said it was perfect, but keep in mind that the wifi issue is a rare one, that I haven't encountered (nor have any of the people i know with ipads). But any brand new device is going to have it's bugs... Considering how relatively shitty the first iPhone was, I'm actually blown away with how good this thing is.
As for multitasking/iWork.... It looks like it might be announced on Thursday. That said, do NOT get one expecting it to be a computer replacement. It just wont be as fast as a computer.
That said, the keyboard is surprisingly manageable. My wpm definitely sucks a fat one compared to my laptop, but after a few days of use I'm getting pretty decent. It'll never be as fast, but it'll get close enough that I can do typing iPad activities without bother.
Keep in mind though that a mouse and physical keyboard are just about the most optimized control methods possible. The brain already struggles to keep up with a mouse. For content creation, where you're doing a lot of input, you can never beat a computer.
HOWEVER, for content consumption the iPad is far superior. Web browsing feels much better, games are amazing (and have just scratched the surface of all the potential), books are easy and nice to read, and with netflix and abc apps (plus the many more that are sure to come out), you have an astounding library of video. The iPad is straight up the most entertaining piece of technology available.
So if all you're looking for is a way to get work done, don't waste your time or money. But if you have a few hundred dollars to spend, and want to get something that's fun for hours on end, go buy an iPad, my friend!

can one watch porn on an ipad?
Haha yes actually, the first made-for-iPad porn site exists, and runs on $1 payments. Not sure if making those payments is as easy as the rest of the iPad, but in either case they're gonna make a fortune
wait made for ipad porn? i can't just go to porn hub on it?
Oh feel free (it would look glorious), but I mean first website designed for safari on the iPad (in terms of formatting etc)
The fact that the Ipad requires websites to be specifically designed for it (in terms of formatting etc) sounds like a pretty substantial argument against ever buying one.
Haha you folks assume the worst! Even "normal" websites look and browse WAY better than on a computer. The screen is just amazing.
However, a website can still be designed with exact sizes and positions for the iPad, and it just looks even better!

Eh, I'll swing by the 5th Ave store this weekend and check one out. I still don't think it's worth my money yet, but am open to the idea of a 3rd choice between my shitty 12" Dell work lappy and my 17" MBP tank for turning drafts on work trips.
Yeah I guess if you're doing a lot of travel work it might not be worth it. Although Pages looks like it could be pretty solid, and I'm sure you could get the hang of typing pretty fast... but there still might be the compatibility issues you were worried about before.
Still, it can't be too long before a really good 3rd party word processor comes out

I'm confirming research/analysis and revising shitty 1st/2nd years' writing. Massive from scratch word processing is not my concern. Compatibility . . . yeah, but if Pages allows me to save/send as a .doc file type, I'm less concerned. The main problem is some moron general counsel/partner seeing the "wrong" extension at the end of the document name and flipping out for no reason at all.
get open office
smittens sounds smitten.
You would be too if you had one :D although I really need to stop bringing it to class... I thought a laptop was distracting enough...
