Well, despite the fact that it doesn't have a front facing camera, microphone, or flash and that Boston Apple patrons will have trouble communicating whether they want an iPad or an "iPad" at the Apple Store... I still think it'll be a great product and I'm probably going to be getting one lol.

Ooooo, I didn't see that. Well somebody told me it didn't.

Most press reviews mention the iPad not having multitasking. Maybe they are lying. Maybe they will add it later on, or some just don't care. I don't know. For now, there is none, and that, among other things, will make the iPad less of a choice for businesses. And it's hard to shake a first impression.

smittens, it's not that I think the iPad isn't 'cool'. It's that it doesn't do anything for me that other devices can't do quite a bit better (word processing, image processing, using a mouse), and it lacks several distinctive traits I would have longed for, and for those I might have to jailbreak it or buy supplemental stuff. Supplemental stuff is okay - for lap- or desktop computers. The iPad is not that, in my opinion, it's a device to make the tech-fearing crowd use tech, and that's fine - just not for me. I am not afraid of technology, I am afraid of inefficiency. And I foresee a great deal of inefficiency with the iPad, were I to buy and use one.

Oh, and one last thing.

My main worry is that it won't support flash, but I've heard that that's just a business scheme to get people to drop adobe and go with html 4... because adobe's evil. But I really think that's pretty farfetched and isn't going to work any time soon so I hope they make a deal with adobe and nbc so I can watch hulu on one of these things. In which case... buying an iPad should become a required step in gaining US citizenship.

It doesn't have multitasking now (except probably for music).

Drawing, image processing, possibly writing (except that it'll be through Pages which sucks), internet browsing doubly, and email will all be decisively better. Assuming the demonstration is anything like the product, which in Apple's case it usually is.

But yeah, lack of flash kind of sucks. But nowhere near enough to offset everything positive that will be the iSlate.

Lack of Flash is just a matter of time, other devices that have ARM Cortex CPU's (some Nokia tablets and Phones) have propriety Flash already, and Adobe has stated it will be releasing a player for ARM, as the netbook market may move away from x86(Atom) to ARM.

And Gavan, the OS on both the iPhone and the iPad are kind of based on OSX, but no full version of OSX will ever run on an Arm device unless Apple do it themself. No public source code means no public port. Just because someone compiles the Linux kernel for a device also means nothing, Apple are known for encrypting their firmwares, so getting drivers out of them can be a PITA, if not next to impossible, so even with a working kernel, build system etc, etc, making a Linux work would just be too much effort of either device. They also encrypt the boot loader, so just changing it can brick a device like that.

They have BSD based kernels already, may as well just hack the shit out of what they already got :)

Maybe, the device itself seems like a good idea, I just hope they don't fuck up the OS proper like they did with the iPot/iPhone, having Springboard loaded and polling the damn touchscreen all the time really can slow down homebrew apps and the likes. Prolly will, but it will be my bitch, and I will pull it's insides apart, and you wouldn't wanna be my iPad... heh
