It's always been named Prometheus Prime, ever since we Serco (or Prometheans, as we were known then) looked up in our skies and saw the burning orb emerge from the darkness.

/ooc Really, the name "prometheus prime" was arrived at about a day or so after 3D planets were added to background textures.

Ehhh... not too sure about the Prometheus Prime idea. Break outta your obsession with the Prometheus for a sec, ctishman. Naming a planet after a spaceship (or vice versa) is a little over the top, wouldn't you say? It's like they ran outta names or something. Besides, you don't know if there are going to be any bigger and meaner ships for the Serco. Let's leave it at that.

=b

The same applies for Lady Serco. Now maybe if that leader chick had a real name, like Vlaana Azleea from Ground Control II, then you might be on to something.

http://www.massive.se//upload/Poster_Vlaana_Rifle_on_Shoulder.jpg

See, I wouldn't mind getting my ass kicked by a leader like this Vlaana chick. Comin' back from a failed Serco gov't mission? Face some torture from her. Rawr! But just Lady Serco? Meh...

A few planet names that I've come up with for when I was still gming BattleTechRPG would be:

Krelon: A small planet on the outskirts of colonized space(my personal favorite)

Volith, Yolir, Nemyz, Caroen, and Hwiquz

I don't see the problem with Prometheus Prime. No reason that the Serco Special shouldn't carry the name of the Sercon homeworld proudly. Nothing over the top about it. Very much in keeping with standard naming conventions.

Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, Maryland, California, Nevada, Tennesee. Just a few of the ships lost at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. All named for a state in the Union. Hardly over the top.

And maybe it's time to stop refering to women as "chicks". It's 2004 (read, the 21st century), not 1964.

We're dealing with humanity in exile here. They're not gonna choose names that just sound cool, and as far as we know there won't be any aliens at all. Most likely, they'd choose names that meant something to them or reminded them of home. Additionally, religious names have the benefit of carrying innate weight with many players who were raised in an even slightly religious manner. The more unconscious the recognition, the easier the immersion. Thus:

--Judeo-Christian--
Aaron
Ararat
Avon
Benzonia
Bethel
Bethlehem
Boaz
Bozrah
Canaan
Carmel
Carmi
Damascus
Ebenezer
Eden
Eleazar

I don't think Sercon is even the adjective form of Serco. See, now you're just making stuff up...

>Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, Maryland, California, Nevada, Tennesee. Just a few of
>the ships lost at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. All named for a state in the
>Union. Hardly over the top.

None of those ships were named Earth. We're talking on a larger scale here. We're talking about naming a WHOLE planet for a model of ship that is continuously being manufactured and owned by thousands of pilots. Not just one unique ship given a special name. I don't know, it seems silly.

It's like you have a whole fleet of Earth battlecruisers. Before you know it your once elite Earth battlecruisers will be a piece of crap within a decade or two, giving your planet a crappy reputation by labeling these rickety old ships with 'em. There's consequences with using such names like that.

>And maybe it's time to stop refering to women as "chicks". It's 2004 (read, the
>21st century), not 1964.

I apologize if anyone was offended. The term is however not considered old and is still commonplace today, so there's no need to spout false feministic propaganda. In either case the point still stands. A name like Lady Serco doesn't exactly strike fear when your nation is bent on being war like. Vlaana does.

Allow me to copy and paste a published description of this female leader:

>In her mind, she has been tasked by her Emperor with a divine objective all of
>humanity must be united and those who resist are not worthy of existence. She
>follows the Imperial decree with an almost fanatical fervor: Give no pardon, no
>surrender.

>The end always justifies the means. Few have seen her in person, and of those who
>have, few still live.

>To look into her cold, dark eyes usually means that you are about to be executed,
>unless you are one of her most trusted envoys. Shunning human contact, she
>mainly commands her forces through two agents, almost as ruthless as herself:
>Imperial Centurions Cezarus and Dracus.

See, now doesn't that sound better than "For Lady Serco!"? She's not some statue of liberty figure that can be bought for fifty cents at some popsicle stand. She's a powerful leader that is to be feared!

Some of the very remote systems should be named something like

x
y
f
etc.
with the planets inside named x-1, x-2, etc.

It may seem a little bit lazy but I feel it seems more realistic.
Jun 16, 2004 Eldrad link
Same suggestion as ojok2, except use greek letters instead of roman.
Jun 16, 2004 paedric link
State or planet, they are all hunks of rock. As I see it, the ship is a Prometheus class ship. Not a ship named Prometheus. How can eveyone have a ship named Prometheus? And who is to say whether the ship or the planet came first once the game goes gold? The mythos is all that matters and will decide all.

IMNSHO, Prometheus Prime sounds *just* like the name that the Sercon homeworld would have. Why wouldn't our special carry the name of our glorious homeworld? (Sercon, Serconian, what-evah. Has this even been decided yet as I've seen it a few different ways).

I personally feel that there should not be plain alpha or numeric planet/station/sector names. All should have proper (if whimsical) names. Alpha/numeric names [i.e. x1a, 101-A1A, etc...] would just destroy the immersion (for me). Names like Oxian 3 work as long as not carried to extreme [i.e. Oxian Prime, Oxian Minor, Oxian 2, Oxian 3, ...., Oxian 45]

Give me Lady Liberty over "Vlaana Azleea" any day laddie. Boadicea would be a close second.

Okay, allow me to finish the SERCO debates sprining up here with my own remarks.

Lady Serco--

Okay, first thing, the Statue Of LIberty is a beacon to the freedom of the US so please remember that next time you decide to compare Lady Serco and Lady Liberty. The Lady Serco IS feared, if you studied Serconian (it's Serconian!)history and texts you'd discover that she was a valent warrior!

And on the side, as an American, the Statue Of Liberty is a symbol of American understanding, and stability. She represents the openness of America but that we will never waiver in our beliefs.

--NOW--

Prometheus Prime--

I think that naming a warship after our homeworld is a befitting thing since it shows we are proud of our heritage and also puts the might of Prometheus Prime behind all the Prometheuses sold!

I think that we should continue that proud tradition! Prometheus may be a hellish environment but why not also represent that in the hell of battle!? We withstand hell at home making us stronger in battle! Thus why should we not name our craft such? Why not associate the craft with the hellish world hmm?

Prometheus Prime: Hellish homeworld of the Serco Nation!
Prometheus: The hellbringer on the battlefield!

--AND--

Sercon vs Serconian:

Sercon sounds more like a mineral or precious resource like Silicon, Serconian sounds more like a native inhabitant of the world.

Anyways, does it really matter in the usage? Why not just use both? It's clear who your talking about so if you like Sercon more than Serconian, go ahead and use Sercon, for the old players, Serconian can remain in use as well.

Anyways, MORE PLANETS!
