Name the Universe Contest!

Hi Guys. We need names for objects in the new universe. Names for stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. We don't want actual star names (for various reasons), and they cannot be from any sort of copyrighted material (popular fiction, movies, other videogames, whatever). Nor are we going to name things after actual players ;). We're looking for cool, somewhat random name ideas. We'll pick the suggestions we like, and you'll get to see the names applied in the new universe. Thanks!

It's hard to come up with names with those restrictions in place but here goes:
Berg, Heuvel, Rots, Ruimte, Zon, Maan, Aarde. These are dutch words.
Mulaith, Thenui, Glragk, Nitchivo, Rasputitsa, Robyt
And my favorit: Harmless Trader
Sorry I just had to :)

PLANETS:

Prometheus Prime (Serco Homeworld)
Haven (good name for a pirate or trader planet?)
Yorn (desert world?)
Splash (maybe a water world?)
Babylon (tropical paradise?)
Moonview (a planet with several moons?)
Gem (kinda common, yet it's a good name for a mining colony)
Binaria (planet in a binary system)
Exile (supposed prison world? Maybe where Guides send bad players?)
Defiance (some neutral planet? Or national border world)
Pi (Itani world, science capital of the galaxy)

STATIONS:

Couragous (some national border outpost?)
Last Stand (again, a national border outpost with some battle history?)
New Vegas (I've always seen the s9 as a casino like building from the strip in Las Vegas, why not run with it?)
Hive (Great name for a fleet base)
Balance (station held between to planets in the exact center of the pull)
Arena (station near Frigate)

STARS:

Thunderflare (large sun? Bright white?)
StarFreeze (okay okay, I am serious about this! Not only would it be a great tribute but also a functional name!)

Thats all I got...some (like "gem") are semi-common but as I said, I think it's still a useful name and a great idea for some independant mining colony (say, like a station in s7, although not a border world)

Oh, and incarnate, great way to play off the SDF Contest :P. It's a good idea, you'll attract a lot of attention with the word "Contest" in the title

I suggest a group of sectors controlled by a rogue AI fleet with the following names:
00 (home planet)
01 (second sector)
10 (third sector)
11 (fourth sector)
These worlds would be in close proximity to each other, xenophobic as hell and crawling with bots. There would really be no reason to go there, and no way to get on their good side.

Beyond that, you'd probably be surprised to find out that someone gave me a book dating from 1904, filled with place names and geographical descriptions in a hundred languages, some of which are now dead. If you like, I could send this book to you at Guild to assist in the naming of star systems. Email me if you're interested.

Here's a few potential names taken from The Glossary:

-Absal (Persian for a garden or vineyard, perhaps a lush agricultural world?)
-Akumna (Native American language group, specifics unknown. "A desolate, bad, impassable way." Perhaps an asteroid belt or other navigational hazard?
-Bode (Yaruba, a customs house)
-Boma (Bantu for a fortified area)
-Carrefour (French for a crossroads. Trading post?)

More to come.

And Finally... <insert drum roll here>

Qwerty (A lasting tribute to the greatest e-mail of all time--the first one. But in that case, it would be qwertyuiop... I'm pretty sure)

Oh, and instead of Starfreeze Day, we can name a whole system "Starfreeze", in his honor.

Hehe, did the random name generator run out of names? Okay, here are mine:

Cythex
Dipocco
Eruyo
Feruvi
Ghuikala
Hyera

No meaning behind any of 'em. Totally random from my brain. Hope this helps.

Oh oh. I'll borrow names from our universe!
The galaxy cluster can be called... Local Group!
The group of galaxy clusters can be called... Local Super-cluster!

Man, our scientists are SMART!

But I prefer other names they assigned, like the Andromeda galaxy or the Virgo Super-cluster.

Perhaps to honour some great writers/scientists:
Sheffield
Adams
Brahe
Kuiper
(van) Allen
Tsiolkovski (The first to make rocketry into a science)
Goddard

Here's some random names. Unless otherwise noted, these are for neutral planets.

Arranias <-- Itani Planet of some sort
Veraesai <-- NT planet of some sort
Psinal
Log'pak (pronounced like a Klingon would)
Tarena (pronounced with slight Russian accent)
Natyl
Jun 15, 2004 Pyro link
Itania (seems familiar)

Off the top of my head:
Thoth
Arzule
Hiroth (my standard roleplaying identity's last name, but a decent planet name)
Azalure
Talog (Serco?)

I think the Az* names are better suited to Itani... I don't know why, they just sound like it...
Jun 15, 2004 ctishman link
-Cha Lam (Tibetan, "high road or large road" Perhaps a well-traveled spaceway or section of spaceways?)
-Chang (Chinese, village or market town)
-Dakhlet (Arabic. An area free from sand, yet surrounded by dunes. Could be adapted to refer to a station in the midst of an asteroid field, an oasis of sorts)
-Ebala (Dialect of Bantu, refers to a resting place at the meeting of two roads)
-Iseweri (Ketosh, Uganda. Well or watering hole. Iseweri Outpost as a refueling point?)
-eFagh (Gabonaise, a field or plantation)
-Festung (German, fort or fortress)
-Fondo (Songhai for road or path)
-Fundeadouro (Portuguese, anchorage or port)
-Gabristan (C. Asian, burial ground)
-Gunong Api (Malay for volcano)

I like Thoth :D and I love this thread!

As for my suggestions:

Planets:
Keydor (A gateway planet?)
New Sahara (A nice desert planet. Not deserted mind you.)
Dominia (Slave trading planet.)
Lavell (Sounds like a very peaceful planet to me.)
Sanction (A judicial planet)
Harbor (Just the name for a planet bursting with trade)
Junction (The outer planet at the edge of one of the solar systems)
Xith (Xithricite has to be named after something right??)
Terminus (A dead end planet at the edge of a solar system.)
Odia (Prison planet.)
Leodis (Another high security prison planet. Hell in space.)

Stars/Sectors:
Divina (Sounds like a great name for a really bright star, bright enough to bring thoughs of a divine being to mind.)
Twilight (I've always liked the eerie and dim sectors; makes for good hunting grounds.)
Veil (Another shady sounding sector. The sector appears dim, yet the sun still emits a lot of UV light and radioactivity.)

Solar Systems/Nebulae?:
Sinistra (The complementing nebula)
Dextera (The other complementing nebula)
The Vath (A dense and difficult place to navigate)
Aether (Unexplored region in space. Possibly a forbidden land of religious importance, a sacred and untouched plane. None the less no one wants to know what lays inside.)

Oh. Someone beat me to it. "Carrefour" is the name of a chain of "super-stores" in Thailand. Because Thai is the only language I know (besides English) I've selected a few from that source:

Sakonlok - "Universe"
Pra Atit - "the Sun"
Dao - "star"
Dara - "star" sometimes used in the sense of "movie star"
Dao Angkan - "Mars"
Dao Poot - "Mercury"
Sangjan - "moonbeam"
Talat - "market"
Tanon - "street, road, path"
