Anyone running Windows 8 RTM?

Any of our PC users out there running the Windows 8 RTM preview (build 9200)? If so, you're welcome to try the recently-posted Windows Store version of the game. If you do test it, please uninstall any other copy of VO, to make sure the Windows Store build is being tested from "scratch" so to speak. Among other things, I'm not sure that the configs are quite right for detecting graphical settings on PCs, and most of our testing has been on tablets so far. But it should theoretically work for PCs, tablets, and even PCs that also have touchscreens like the new Ultrabooks.

So, please feel free to post here and let us know if you see anything weird compared to a regular install of VO (settings too low or high, certain stuff not working, etc).

This win8 build is basically a prototype (clearly, Win8 isn't even shipped yet), but we'd like to get any issues polished up before the OS comes out in.. October (?) or whatever.

I'm not upgrading to the RTM preview, but as soon as they fix the problem with the Windows 8 Pro for partners, I will upgrade, as that key/version wont expire upon release.

Should be before the official release.

[edit]

Just tried again and the download is working, will let you know of any issues I have.

Mouse and keyboard don't work at all. F1 tp F12 don't work as expected, for example, F9 will not change view. I guess some detection should be done on device type, because it felt as retarded as Windows 8 itself. (If that's what you were going for, good job lol).

Mouse and keyboard don't work at all.

That's weird. I know Ray worked with it extensively on various VM desktop builds of the previews through the RTM. But, maybe he was just using the touch emulator.

I haven't had a chance to try it on desktop Win8 at all yet. Thanks for helping to test, guys.

Well, the mouse cursor is on screen all the time, and when it gets to the edges I cannot turn anymore. Also for some reason, F8 does like a turbo tap for me, F3 is like pressing E. Did you just port the 'droid version to Windows 8?

Hmm, the Function keys haven't been converted.

I've focused mainly on tablet support and haven't tried it as a normal Desktop game.

*throws stack of papers in the air and tips a gatorade dispenser like an angry coach* Guess that means gameplay updates are hosed for a few more weeks!

VO is my place to relax that's why i get so grouchy when the good updates stop for awhile.

Nothing has stopped. This is exactly what has been ongoing for months, and how we have a full-time artist now. I'm not apologizing for it.

But I do apologize for the Windows Store URL above not being correct initially.. it has now been fixed.

Some more feedback.

If you move the mouse to the "Start" area and minimize VO, then click back onto VO, the mouse doesn't focus back on VO till you hit a key.

Is it really using DX11? It's not really anymore playable than say, the Android version on Asus transformer, but everything does seem a little smoother. Won't really be able to tell until the mouse works though.

Yes, it's totally DX11. But that's really meaningless from a performance standpoint, or really in any sense of it being "different" from a GLES or DX9 build. It's just another graphics API to which we're rendering mostly the same stuff (or as close as we could get).

It's DX11 because it has to be DX11, there's no support for anything else on Windows 8. But for our future graphical needs, we were perfectly happy with DX9 (it's more about content design and shader usage than any limitations in the API).

Right now it probably configures graphics for more mobile settings. We'll look at dialing things up for desktops.

ok have Win8 RTM desktop installed, installed game from link (new install) and mouse stops at edge of screen, so you cant control how far you turn. weird ice roids maybe graphics on my end and win8 not have driver yet for it (intel HD 4500) left, right,up,down keys not working to steer that way. other than that looks good so far

I installed the regular version of VO from the VO site and its runs very smooth on Win8 RTM if that helps any also, just has problems running it from the app store

We're in the midst of shipping an update to Microsoft to fix the desktop issues. We don't really know how long it'll take for that to get approved, but we hope it'll be soon. Some of the fixes were only documented pretty recently by MS (like how to do mouse-look on Win8).

Well while waiting I thought I'd play about with plugins and skins, without much success. I tried dropping a plugin folder which contains most the plugins I use day to day(TCS, Targetless, movesectorinfo, CTC timer), into the AppData/Packages/<vo package>/LocalState folder, but nothing. I then thought about putting it in the "protected" app storage area in %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApps but trying to run VO gave me a file system error 65553 and on the next run, VO seemed to download everything again, the plugin folder was removed.

Skins work as expected though, just stick them in AppData/Packages/<vo package>/LocalState and edit the config.ini as required.

[edit]

Also the Store version and the desktop app can live side-by-side without any conflicts at all. The desktop app is pretty self-contained except that silly registry key the updater needs to see where vo is installed.

cant figure out where to put it either Yoda. I tried AppData\Local\Packages\4A389328.VendettaOnline_7wfbd1pwf3jsa\Settings

AppData\Local\Packages\4A389328.VendettaOnline_7wfbd1pwf3jsa\LocalState

so idk where it would go

Wow, it sounds like Microsoft really wet the bed with the way Windows 8 installs programs.
