Programs (or Desktop apps) install like any previous Windows version. It's just "Windows Market" apps that have the secure storage and stuff. You cannot even browse to the folder under normal circumstances, which in reality is just like on iOS and Android.
Yoda is correct in where the plugins folder should go. However, that is completely untested and pretty low on the priority list right now.
Well, I guess it would be low priority as the normal download works fine for desktops. I guess mobile devices would work cool with this (or just as well as Android) but I have no plans to buy a Windows Tablet.

Oh yeah, about the DX9 > DX11 thing, remember when you went from a 3DFX Voodoo to first breed nvidia cards? Well newer cards are doing this, it's not quite emulation, but DX11 stuff defo runs smoother than DX9. Not saying you should drop DX9 or anything...

Ok, the Win8 update is now in the Windows Store. Please let us know how it works on your desktops (aside from the plugins thing).
We're getting pretty poor ratings, but unfortunately I can't tell exactly why.. because apparently the Windows Store doesn't allow comments in their ratings. Fantastic. I'm hoping they were from confused Windows 8 Desktop people who couldn't really play.

Well, not all the keys work still, for example, number pad, cursor keys, insert home, etc. With Mouselook on, it seems fine. But if you turn mouselook off, which I do, turn speed is waaay too low, even with sensitivity cranked all the way up.
The arrow keys and insert/home/delete/etc... work for me.
My numpad doesn't when numlock is on though. I always keep it off so the Home/etc... keys are active.
Windows 8 reports mouse movements to Store Apps differently than to normal desktop apps, so there's some additional translation that I'll have to do when mouselook is off.

Ok, they work when I press them, but I cannot map them. For instance pressing home sends a hail for me no matter what I map it to.
I guess also, international keyboard layouts are ignored, as I have to press # to get the console (under ] for me) instead of ` that I use in normal VO (Under Esc for me).

We had to kind of hack the keyboard stuff to get it to work, as MS really wants Win8 apps to use their own text-entry system and not directly bind to keys the way that we do.
We'll try and get the features 1:1 vs the normal PC version, but right now we're just focusing on making it work remotely right at all.

No problem, it's not like I need to or want to use that version, and it is kind of usable right now.

I nearly got a player kill using it, but he ran and hid in the station heh.

Oh yeah, and no matter what I bump my setting up-to, they always reset, I guess you know this too?

ok downloaded the new updated VO from the app store and it works great seems like the function keys work now also. has no plugins installed yet (misses TA for mining) but it works just like the desktop version except for the plugins. I would like to know where they go. I also put a great review up that I hopes helps people when the read it, the reviews has a character limit so you really cant do much , but I tried. any questions Inc you can email me. Only thing I am having trouble with is if I switch to Internet and then switch back to game it times me out and logs off. no idea why because it doesn't do that with desktop version on windows 8. also the app menu crashes VO app when starting a lot on a PC maybe something to look at
Yeah, Minen, my first guess was right, plugins go in the AppData/Packages/<vo package>/LocalState folder but seems they wont load yet because they don't work yet.
yea Yoda, just tried that myself but as fighter jocks say "no joy" :(
they wont load yet because they don't work yet.
ahhh ok missed that so the Devs or MS have to fix that? no idea who is at fault
Devs.
They are just happy it is playable on a desktop, and you can always install the normal version.

Honestly, we don't know why the plugins don't load. It isn't disabled or anything, just isn't an issue we've really dug into or debugged yet.
Windows Store apps get suspended a short time after it gets put into the background. If the app is suspended for one minute or longer, the connection will time out.
There's a Background Task API that may be usable to stop the timeout but those special tasks are only allowed 2 seconds of CPU time every 15 minutes.

wow that sucks..
The only time I have noticed the time out is when I switch to the desktop app, which would obviously kick any logged in client I have.
So the way VO handles timeouts is alright. Most of the time.

Yoda, what settings are you changing that are getting reset?
Video settings are the only ones that may not work. All others should.
