When it's done, get torrents up an I'll seed 'em with plenty of bandwidth :)

Well it's done. One problem. I'm having trouble exporting it in a reasonable size. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here, but the video is only 5:45 minutes long and the last few times I've tried exporting it, it's been over a gig. I've been playing around with the settings, and I can get it to a reasonable size, but then the video quality and resolution is beyond terrible.

So i've gotta figure something out to decrease the size without making the video look entirely crappy before I'll post it.

I'm guessing that whatever software you're using is referring to MPEG-1 when it says .AVI. I guess if you're married to that software, QT would be the next best thing for compatibility.

Just post the gig!@

a lot of machines (especially running windows (especially if some schmuck installed it without dma drivers)), couldnt even play a 1 gig movie in 5 minutes ;)

hehehe

I just overclocked my 2.8 to a 3.5ghz so it should handle it fine :)

you could look for a setting setting the codec, which should be xvid divx or ogg theora, I'm guessing you won't have the latter.

If you are still using premiere, you can make a COPY of the working folder, open up THAT composition file, and change the video fps, dimensions, compression, etc. on that one without nuking your original settings. Once you have a smallish end result (whether is is AVI or MPEG or MOV or whatever), you can delete the copy of the folder that you made.

That's a SUREFIRE way to edit down your Premiere movie if you are having problems.

I wish I could be of more help, but I haven't used Premiere in like 6 years.

Already tried that Leber, but the end result is of such terrible quality that it's difficult to watch. There's got to be a way to get this to a reasonable size without exporting it in 120X200 resolution and 5 FPS. I need to get it down to at most 10 MB otherwise it's going to take people forever to download.

Just tried exporting at 70% quality and 12FPS with small resolution... got the size to 90 MB...

90mb is great.

But I prefer 1 gb

Well box, I just finished exporting the high quality version with decent resolution, 29FPS and 100% quality. Comes out to 695MB. You want that one?

Edit: Maybe if people were able to stream the file instead of download it, it would be easier?
Jan 26, 2006 momerath42 link
You have to keep in mind how short it is- even a very fast home connection cant stream a 700 meg 5 minute file in realtime. And there is no reason they should have to. You can get *very* near dvd quality for a 2 hour movie in 700M. And even DVD which is using old MPEG2, fits like 4 hours in 4.5G.

Export it in high quality, I'll download it and reencode it for you, unless someone else wants to volunteer. I can't promise the results will be great since I don't plan on spending much time on it, but it's dead simple in linux to reencode it as xvid.

Cool momerath, thanks. One question though. How do you want to download it? I'm not sure if I can find someone to host a 695 MB file.

Or if someone could instruct me how to reencode it myself, I could try and do it. I don't have linux though.

I really would like this available in quality that will do it justice. This has been my baby for months now and so many from the community put their time into it as well.
Jan 26, 2006 momerath42 link
Can you upload via ftp? If so, send me an email, and I'll send you an address and l/p. You could also look at setting up a bittorrent tracker for a more reliable method- and then anyone else who wants to see it right away or have a go at encoding it can do so easily. It's not hard- I think there was an opensource project to make a real easy cross-platform gui. I'll see if I can find it.

It occurs to me now, that if the camera is in a ship which does a lot of turning, the starfield shifting all the time could cause compression to either fail to make the file small, or lose all the detail (it doesnt know the diff between a starfield and a ship). Does the camera move a lot?
Jan 26, 2006 Ghost link
Yep, I can do ftp.

I don't have your e-mail address though. If you don't want it posted, send me an e-mail at Epierce41@yahoo.com with the address and l/p.

And there is a LOT of camera movement with a LOT of starfield shifting.

Thanks for your help btw, I really appreciate it. I know you've got your hands full with plenty of other things.
Jan 26, 2006 momerath42 link
If you're using Premiere, as I just read in Leber's post, I'm inclined to believe, given all the camera movement, that Premiere is doing as good a job as can be done (or close). At any rate, I'll send you an email tonight or tomorrow and have you upload the file. If nothing else, I can host a bittorrent.

If you ever need to send big files and can't think of any way to do so, consider using you send it.

Thanks Lemming,

Actually, if that's free, why dont you send it that way Ghost? It will save me having to set up ftpd, set your login and then remove ftpd once we're done:)
Jan 26, 2006 Ghost link
Cool, I'll try that. I need your e-mail address for that too though.
