Yawn.
Just cause I think this is a good topic, I felt I had to comment on something. Read a post about weapon power-up/down and someone usign irritating caps to complain about it, stating that nations at war don't have weapons powered down, and making the 'training weapons' cost 4x the real one.
Okay, first off, caps make you look like an idiot. Second, constructive criticism is really a good thing.
Now, as for weapons being taken offline even during wartime, yes, we do that, in real life. Its to prevent human error, weapon system malfunctions, etc. etc. And these systems *do* take time to re-arm. Not long, but it is a few seconds. Computers have to boot, weapons system diagnostics have to clear, authorization for weapons-free needs to be verified, yada yada.
Next up is a 'simulation' weapon type. I think the idea is awesome. We already use that in today's world, particularly in mock furballs. you guys should go to a nearby Army/AF base (for instance Pope AFB in NC) and watch the mock training battles. If you wonder how they determine who is 'downed', its by... simulation hits. The guns don't fire, as the weapons aren't loaded, but the computer designates when you've been tagged, and you're out. Time to land and get chewed for how sorry a pilot you are, and get schooled on proper maneuvering. And a training weapon that does no damage should **not** cost 4x the cost of a weapon that WILL kill you. That is counter intuitive. Would you buy a toy plastic laser-tag for as much as you would a .357? I think not. They should be very low cost, if not free, and there should be no license requirement for them either. Give the newbies that need combat practice but don't have the cash to blow from dyign something to learn with.
So yeah... I'd love to see a weapons-safe and weapons-free mode instituted, along with 'simulation guns'. Make the sim guns really cheap, for new players to get an idea of what they want to work on using. Would also be a much less expensive way to train said newbies in combat, and a way to keep the vets sharp.

there are training weapons...sort of...during the early combat training missions the drones are armed with them. You can just pick them up after you blast them.
