no aiming cone with a beam... at all.
My idea of an interesting beam weapon would be a constant stream of particles (like mining beam) that did little damage...bout 1000/sec. Or it could weigh 3K and do about 5000/sec.
Capship beams at any power are not something I'd like to see on fighters.

as for beem weapons:
i'd rather see them fire strate ahead (no autoaim at all) and hjave a range of 150 - 200m and do enough damage to destroy a cent in 2 shots but have an insane delay (5+ seconds)

no it's not likely to get better, and complaining about it will only make it worse.

if theres no aiming cone than its nothing more than another useless weapon on the heavy ships. they dont maneuver well enough to use a low autoaim weapon effectively against light ships.
(and i'd like to point out that my balance threads include low range, low damage, high mass beam weapons that can be mounted on the bombers)

I'm a proponent for the slow everything down by 5% suggestion.
I think beam weapons should be limited to sparring activities... ie., no damage, but 'tags' the target, which is temporarily disabled if 'tagged' a certian number of times. The combat applications of beams are impossible to balance.

you can't hit a cent with a weapon that travels at the speed of server without auto-aim?
anyway, beam wepons can have a small auto-aim cone (comprable to most other energy weapons) but i don't think the should need much of one. especialy if they have a decent range.

not realy, they are a different animal than perjectile weapons, but then so are seeking missiles, and mines. it will take some thought and more intelegent solutions than "Nerf it or else" but beam weapons can be balanced using, mass, damage, rate of fire, auto-aim cone, energy drain, duration of beam, beam scatter, beam width, pre-fire animation/delay, etc.

I really think a powerful beam weapon should have no auto aim at all. It has no delay to impact with target, so all you need to do is point to somewhere on the body of the other ship, and watch it disintegrate.

actually what the capital class beam weapons need is a firing delay ala the thread i referenced above to prevent thier being effective against light fighters.
but that doesn't solve the problem that they look ghey!
