Connectionproblems

These disconnects are really annoying, somewhat every few minutes or maybe hours he bots behave strangely or guards just fly in roids or whatever and there it is again a diconnect... i don't count anymore how many ships i lost due them.

mac os 10.4.10
no matter if i set the network to auto or compatile it happens again and again. my ping is somewhat around 100 and the machine itself does not seem to have a problem for other apps work good as well including teamspeek or other apps requiring a constant connection...
i asked around but VO also does not seem to need some firewall settings right?

Sounds like a network problem.

wonder why my isp just picked this game ...

It could be a firewal thing... I discovered that guildsoftware is on the blacklist for a couple IP blocking apps, so I had to manually override to connect... you could be experiencing a similar problem, only with a less efficient firewall.

Are you in a college dorm or large apartment building or something, by chance?
Jun 27, 2007 Shaded link
you mean a shared connection or stuff?
nope direct 768 kbit up and 6 mbit downstreaming DSL at home, which is on the other side of the atlantic i admit.
i got all the ports i want so just tell me please which you need, for then i check again at the router firewall if there is some setting blocking one of them. (shouldn't be more i guess)

this pretty annoying problem presists...

The client connects to majikthise.guildsoftware.com on port udp/21141. Monitor that if you can... this sounds like a firewall problem to me.

Shaded is not alone. In the last week or so I've seen repeated connection issues. On two occasions I couldn't login for hours.

Not a firewall issue (hasn't changed since I started playing two mos ago). Not an ISP issue either.

thanks alot i'll try to teach this to my router/firewall...
hope it helps...

Seems I too am experiencing the same issue and I've been playing Vendetta for years now since in Beta. I cannot fully load Vendetta beyond the "Entering Universe..." screen, although I can hear the sounds of being docked in a station.

However I have recently adjusted the MTU settings on my router in accordance to my ISP up from 1438 to 1500 for the type of connection I have, which is 8mbit down 768mbit up.

At the time prior to this change I was experiencing a lot of slowing down and I even asked my ISP if they have a data management or "bandwidth throttling" policy. I am still waiting to hear.

Try changing the MTU Discovery setting to "Compatibility" mode. That might help.

Setting the Network to Compatibility mode made no difference at all, still cannot fully load VO beyond "Entering Universe...".

What's also weird is that I can fully load with my other pilots, just not my main "Hank Starblazer" pilot. This has made me wonder if I am in a borked sector, which is D4, Supay Outpost, Pyronis.

I use 10.4.10 on a mac connecting to adsl via an "adslnation amx64" router. I had problems connecting to some sites including the apple software updater ( see threadsin http://forum.adslnation.com/ )

The answer seems to set max mtu to 1458 on the mac ( network > ethernet > manual > custom > 1458 . ) This appears to have something to do with British Telecom and the way it works. Even if your isp is not BT it probably goes via BT somewhere .

Might be worth a try ...

ok i checked back with my isp and the tech guy told me "all ports open, no throtteling"
Mr. you could even upgrade you connection, your - dunno english word - is just 10db in theory this would allow a connection up to 16 mb but we could not - or better we are not allowed to guarantee it being stable.

hen i came back to this thread and it made me googeling

if you want some insight into connections...

thank you DaveJohn i gonna try that now.

i went down from 1500 to 512 in a few steps and still i get disconnects.
i changed the games setting from compatible to automatic a few times still the same shit.

today i lost 4 ships because of this and... yes i am pissed being sent home by bots which are such easy prey just because of this crap. because i had to fly all the way back there.
what about you devs make it a bit more transparent how the software figures a mtu setting? like

Testing 1500 ...
Testing if there is an icmp response at all by sending like 15000 package once...

see auto and compatible does not tell me anything.
i know it needs a value but the game does not tell me what it figured to be a good value.
Listen i would like to play this game but it obviously it seems not being enjoyable from my place.

couldn't there be something like a debug mode recognizing disconnects and checking what actually went wrong?

great now today is not a lucky day another dc in the middle of nw...
guys you want more cash then do something, no offense but this is not fun playing vo like that.
and please tell me why does it take ages to log back in again. when i see the game "connecting" firs i go to have a piss and some more drink and then eventuelly either it say disconnected from server or the eula screen is up...
Jul 25, 2007 a1k0n link
The first thing it does is try to negotiate your MTU unless you set that to compatibility mode, in which case it skips that and only uses packets up to 128 bytes. If that takes more than half a second something's obviously screwed. Do you have tcpdump or Ethereal or Wireshark or something where we can get a dump of what's going on?

I know mr_spuck uses the same ISP as you, and he doesn't have these problems...
Jul 25, 2007 mr_spuck link
if it's the same shaded as on on #vendetta we aren't using the same isp. but niki does...

If I kill the client I often have to wait a minute before I can reconnect. That never bothered me enough to report it though.
Jul 25, 2007 a1k0n link
I've got a tcpdump on your IP running on the server while you're playing now. Let me know if you get disconnected.

edit: looks like you just logged off and on again.

at 16:15:21 local you sent your last acknowledge to the server. The server continued retrying packets but your end did not respond.

I don't know what more you expect us to do; the problem is definitely at your end. These aren't especially large packets (the ones that weren't acknowledged were 96, 110, and 111 bytes whereas there had been 120-byte packets passed through before without problems).

Can you try bypassing your firewall/router box?
