anyone else planning on adding to this? just curious.

I still have several designs Im going to upload (they are ineligible for the prize money though) but if there's no submissions planning to come, I will go ahead and close the formal contest, and people can submit any entries for fun or we can roll immediately into the 3rd Gen. contest.

I'll go ahead and say that I'll close the contest unless told otherwise on JULY FIRST, 2008

i want the devs to put in a kestrel and a manticore, and i want to see them duke it out every 3 hours on CNN

oooh...id like that too, but it may get them sued by the EV nova people?

I really like the nabboo starfighter and the vulture droid from star wars. I'm trying to come up with something original-looking with the 2 pods slightly forward of the cockpit.

Whatever happened to Genka's "Vulvinator?" It was sexy.

Ryan - your "StationKiller" makes me laugh. Hehehehe. Is that a MISSILE underneath the vulture? Why would it need a pilot? Just make it a giant seeker missile.

I don't think ship designs should show missiles, etc on the outside. Unless the game is upgraded to actually SHOW the missiles launching and the ship outline changes once the missile is gone.

Remember this is space construction, so the ships don't necessarily need to be streamlined. Although, warships should attempt to minimize their face-on cross-section. (As in, when they turn toward you, they should appear as "thin" as possible.)

yes it is a missile...I suppose it would need a pilot becuase missiles cant...(as of yet)...navigate wormholes. also it was inspired by Monty Pythons Rabbit of Caerbannog, so I suppose its good to laugh.

I just threw the missiles on for show, i figure in game they would appear as launchers.

I always wonderd about the aerodynamics of most of the ships, given the vaccum of space. ih well...

I've done some modeling for Escape Velocity plug-ins in the past, lots of personal work, and am currently working on a few designs for a Sword of the Stars mod that will never be complete(thanks, SotS AI, and you're blatant refusal to use higher-tonnage ships).

What I would like to know before getting started on a design or set of designs(and I can't imagine most other modelers would be far off this mark either) is a set of parameters:

1: Do you have concept art available? If yes, is this art comparable to the current style you wish to represent your game?

2: Are you looking for faction-specific designs, homogenized designs(i.e. what we have now, everyone uses the same equipment), or merely re-creations of what we already have(plus a few more polys one would hope, ehhehheh). If you are looking for faction-specific designs, and there was no concept art, is there writeups for the specific faction to give a relative newbie like myself a concept of what each faction would build?

3: What poly count would you like to see? What is the absolute ceiling in poly counts?

4: How far are the developers going to take the engine? For example, do I need to make my models able to accept different engines, sections, or weapons? Will the engine allow for modular construction in the future?

5: Are model-only entries sufficient? Some of us really stink at skinning. :P

Answer some of those, and I can get a'workin'.

Also, is anyone going to say anything about Ryans blatant art theft? Not saying anything bad about his designs. Just saying that some artists consider art theft to be a very serious offense. A TU-160, A-10, F-14, the starship Enterprise, and a ME-329. Hell, that last entry is probably luftart46.coms work.

You realize that this contest is totally unofficial and that the chances of anything submitted getting into the game are pretty close to nil?

so ..uhm be creative! ..there aren't any restrictions..

Vulvinator was ananzi.

And while copy-pasting parts from airplane schematics ain't exactly the best way to make a pretty picture, I think it works well enough to get the phallic nature of a design across, and it certainly ain't art theft.
Jun 02, 2008 ryan reign link
thank you Genka.

I did use existing aircraft as a basis/inspiration for some of my models, but as its only a basis, it is as stated hardly "art theft". see art theft would be if i took say a ship from EV Nova and said...yep, i made this.

though I suppose the ships I make from various parts from plastic models would be "art theft" by your definition.

and your assumption that no one realized that I used existing concepts for ideas/inspiration is nothing short of offensive to the other people on this post ...(except Leebs, who was probably drunk, but may be offended at the implication...when he runs out of tequila)

on the other hand, I dont believe that the Devs actually have an in house artist on staff...if youre any good, maybe theyd be interested?

i am honored to be remembered for my ship design. but i must say that i did not really design it, i merely attempted to copy the wonders brought forth by the hands of the creator, that most divine, supple, and graceful anatomy through which all of us pass on our journey from the previous world to the current.

ok i got a few designs.

the thing though is that, you know, the thread will just get locked or my post will get deleted for no damn reason. so...

i wont upload any sketches or pics. but i will at least just type them out here.

---

1. the orchid. it has a protective 'shell' mode, with lots of little tiny energy protection things all over the surface... so it is basically enclosed. but it can open up to attack mode, and shoot and stuff.

2. i have various maintenance ships. what they are is the old 'bus' model, that has been treated sort of like a truck base... like the ford f-series pickups. but you slap a lot of different stuff on it for different jobs.

for example you have two giant rotating brushes under it, it becomes a cleaning machine. the stations are constantly being covered in dust from mining and space junk and debris coming off visiting ships, nearby roids, and so forth. they need cleaning!

3. patch welding ship. it is another bus, and its purpose is to patch cracks in the external walls of stations. small cracks.
the process goes like this:
one - identify the crack visually or with a scanner
two - cut a round piece of the hull around the crack. remove
old damaged hull piece.
three - place a new round piece where the hole is
four - weld the new round piece in place

it accomplishes this goal by the means of an arm-apparatus, which is a beam attached to the bus at one end, and on the other a rotating beam, with a cutting tool on one end and a welding tool on the other, so that by its rotation, it can scribe a circle for cutting, and follow the circular seam for welding. in the center of the beam rests a suction device, such as a magnet or adhesive, to manipulate the patch.

4. jetski - basically it is a very small engine with two handlebars and a saddle. it has no cockpit, you just jump on and ride it around. for station maintenance or fun or whatever. wings optional.

5. collector - actually when you clean dust and space junk from around a station, you cant just let it float away. you have to collect it.

the collector has a large magnetized dish, it collects space junk and garbage. it rotates, slowly throwing this trash to a ring surrounding the rotating portion... a section of which has a hole leading to an archimedes screw-type conveyor that compacts the trash into large pellets that come out of the back of the compactor. attached, again, is a bus for power, control, and maneuvering.

there is also a larger collector... it is so large that it requires two 'tug' busses, one on each side. it doesnt have a screw-masher... it just lets trash collect on it. some other apparatus does the processing.

6. turbo miner - a ship, with a somewhat small hull, but very large arms coming out on each side of the hull. at regular intervals, mining ports (L slots) come out of the arms, with pipes coming back towards the hull, and a large container bay underneath it. two engines under the ship provide a low amount of thrust, rendering it super slow. but super stable. the mining beams are unaimed completely, you must simply get close and turn them on.

7. sweeper/collector - combines a physical brush sweeper with a magnetic dish collector, to clean and collect trash at the same time. good for nooks and crannies! especially on those solar array arms, where the power pathways in the arms of the station tend to attract the nano particulate pollution put off by various types of engines. thick deposits of that pollution can cause spontaneous debris-coils to form.

8. liquid based sweeper, collector.
certain forms of build-up require liquid cleaning, but the liquid must be recovered immediately. this is where this ship comes in. resembling sort of a dust buster, the main part blows cleaning liquid out of a rectangular nozzle, which is surrounded by a gas based blowing suction device, which creates a localized atmosphere where liquid particle flow can exist, carrying the pollution particles into the suction tube and down to a collector tub. again, a bus is attached for control, two busses for the large model.

well heres a first attempt at 3D...I like it, if you dont...(this is strictly pre-emptive for the pseudo trolls)...I dont really care. and if you havent submitted a design than prove you can do better...(a desperate challenage so people will feel challenged and design some ships)...so click the link

hmmm...a scifi mmo...would I be totally off to assume that a large percentage of you are star wars fans?

oh well...I was watching it earlier and i always liked the tie fighter...(i even made a plugin for EV NOVA so i could have one)...anyways VO cant have the Tie fighter, as george lucas tried to sue the people who made the animated farce "STAR BALLZ" which indicates he will sue any one for anything. in past contests I'd seen ships that VAGUELY resembled the x wing...so, heres my tie inspired ship.

the UIT QUATAR...(a Quatar is an ancient hindu "punch dagger" which in some cases had a blade on either side of the handle)

I'm still a bit rough with the whole 3D design but...bear with me, I'm learning on my own. maybe I'll take a class next semester when I get back to university, but for now its all trial and error, but I like this one...and I need more coffee!
