After several Serco alts i got sick of them and moved to Gold.
I thought the Vulture looked cool in Serco red. We didn't have a choice of colors back then.
1. Itani
2. I chose Blue (before it was Itani) as it is my favorite color.

I choose the Itani becuase they have the largest of the three galactic empires! long live glorious ITAN! ^^
1: Itani...
2: It looked big :p

Serco, because of the red vulture.
Serco... because the Itani and UIT just didn't seem as fun.
Union Gold, because the backstory makes it clear they are the only nation that doesn't consist of whiny, sucky mass murderers.

I chose NT back in beta, and UIT again once the game was reset. Why? I think I felt closest to those who refused to fall for the politics of hatred, and I especially liked the part about the UIT being self-sufficient enough to invent their own space travel and then go out and settle their own region of space.
Itani.
I played Earth and Beyond as a Jenquia Defender (named Zyl). I, however, despise the endless double talk of eastern mysticism, which was the backbone of the Jenqia culture. I chose Jenquia because of ther "romulan" like fighting style.
As I progressed in that game, I learned that the pirate faction, The Red Dragon, was esentially a more agressive renegade Jenquia sect. I found myself allied with them, and playing out (as much as one could) the concept.
After they closed Earth and Beyond, I sought a new game to fix my sci fi itch. In Vendetta I saw parallels. Serco were the Progen, UIT were like the Terrans, and Itani were the Jenquia. And, coincendtailly, the Itani have a renegade sect of agressive hard liners, The Order of Akan, who are at odds with the introspective naval pondering of their brethern.
Another parallel was in fighting tactics, with Serco favoring heavy sluggers and Itani favoring nimble fighters.
Itani thus became the natural selection, not only for playing what I know, but for playing out as what I like.

Serco.
After reading the backstory, I realized that most people would symphatize with the Itani nation (if they read the backstory that is), so playing Serco was probably going to be more interesting.
I was right.

UIT
Before choosing, I researched the nations, the backstory and the ships.
I couldn't decide exactly what role I would play in the universe until I'd played for a while, and I figured UIT would give me greatest flexibility to choose and re-choose in future.
I also figured UIT had the most interesting and least understood role to play, with lots of possibilities for intrigue.
The serco and Itani represent very extreme philosophical edges of aggression/pacifism, which didn't sit well with me.
Besides, there are no winners in war, except for the people who sell the weapons :P

It would be an interesting thing to have the Itani, UIT and Serco buttons to be randomly ordered in the in the character creation UI.
The itani one being on the left might be too much of an easy/natural selection.

1. Itani
2. Because of the Valk, you all know i LOVE it :)
and Nation specific ships should be only to nations members, its nonsense to see a serco flying a valk etc... nonsense !

See? Serco are the bad guys.

1. UIT
2. Because I like MONEY, and war is profit!
3. ...
4. PROFIT! :)
Here's a question: Is there anyone out there who's played the game for a significant amount of time without EVER creating an ALT? I've always played under my char and haven't bothered starting a new one for the year or so I've been playing.

I chose red, back in alpha. No idea why, must have been a gut instinct. I never regretted my decision, and all my main chars have been on red ever since.
In reply to tkjode: Until very recently, I have not regularly used chars that could be considered 'alts', since they more or less always portrayed the same person in-game.

First I was UIT cause it sounded like they would have more options to go everywhere ingame, then when I saw how boring trading was I made a serco. Now I have three that I play, one of each nation, plus a few other fun alts that I use for random things.
