Gap between Haves and Havenots Widens in VO

It used to be that any player with a million credits could enjoy an hour of fighting and dying gloriously in a furball - but no more. That hour of pure fun now costs five or ten million. Its hard enough to attract other pilots to join a furball five systems away. Who will come when it also costs them an hour of mindless trading or mining?

It doesn't cost them an hour they can just fly standard ships. It's not like you NEED to have the absolute high end to fight.

iry is right. I think we'll see more people using lower-level ships to practice/duel and higher-end ones for events like the Nation War.

Just take escort missions that go along the path you'll be taking anyway... even one system away missions give 300k.

My reaction to the new ship pricing scheme is very simple:

If it is not undone, I will not renew. I *mainly* play BS, BP, and a very occasional jaunt over to B8.

With the new pricing model in place, I'd have to engage in battles far less often in order to be able to pay for the weapons and such.

This is the end of VO for me. I'll give them a week to figure out it was a bad idea, then my account closes.

You DO realize that there will be PvP/Combat ways to get money now, plus BS will provide free ships I think, right?

Also, you don't *have* to use the very best ship. It only costs a lot more if you use up 20 Valks per day.

This was a needed and inevitable change.

The fun comes from interactions with other people, not from endless ship burning...

Pointsman: "Endless ship burning" is often PART of "Interaction with other players" - what do you think people in B8 do all night?

slime73: Changing the ship prices, BEFORE adding whatever "<xxx> new ways to make money" is about the fastest way to collapse an economy I can possibly think of.

Fly a hog mk2, you wimp. Or just quit. Its a much needed change to VO, so deal with it, or do not.
Oct 12, 2008 endrnet link
Why was it needed? I've heard that multiple times now and I don't get it. Maybe I just don't understand something, someone please help explain exactly why this is "a much needed change to VO".

The folks with 100 billion credits won't really ever notice this. The players this hurts most are folks (like me) that only "make money" in order to participate in our preferred pass-times in VO.

Seriously, it takes 5 minutes to make enough money to last you for a few deaths with the most expensive PvP ships. It's not the end of the universe, quit whining...

Because before yesterday, money did not matter at all, in VO, which makes no sense at all. My main usually floats at around 100k, and never really cared about losing a ship, becuase he can take 1 to 3 escort missions and have that cash back in no time. Has this changed? Yes, it bloody well has, now I fly cheaper ships when going into combat that I think I may die in, I think about my ship choice and just do not jump into the best ship available to me.

Why is this a much needed change? Because despite what you may think, this game is supposed to be much more than flipping SpaceQuake.

For years money and death have been meaningless, now we're on to a real need for tactics and skill. I appreciate the change and all the gameplay opportunities attached to it.
Oct 12, 2008 endrnet link
Ok that explains it. Thanks.

Basically this means I may not be the target market for VO. Prior to VO, my online gaming consisted mainly of Unreal Tournament 3.

So in 8 hours, I realized that I could buy ships cheap, play the arcade-style fights (SpaceQuake as you put it), and still have player interaction that wasn't battle-oriented. So they got my cc#.

Whereas you (and perhaps many others) are looking to model the real-world more closely, where you really have to focus on making money to pay for the really cool gadgets, budget your income in a sane way, avoid risk, etc.

I have a wife, kids, dogs, mortgages, and a very demanding job in IT (in other words, I have a life). So SpakeQuake doesn't sound all that bad to me.

Enjoy.

Allow me to chip in with my two cents. It is after all pretty much what I can afford these days anyway with all my money going to storage space:)

VO is changing and it needs change. if it didn't, the game would stagnate and die. Change brings however a lot of problems to players that have found a niche in the "old" game and needs to adjust or find something different to do.

So I understand the reservations of endrnet but at the same times urges him to try it for a bit anyway, maybe use some of the cheaper ships. Maybe the new "rules" makes sense when everybody uses the standard ships. Maybe it becomes more interesting to have a guild that can financially support those that fight for the guild and thus make the guilds matter instead of just being a nametag?

What I don't get is the mindless "I like it, so it is a good thing" arguments that gets thrown around. Maybe it is a good thing for you, but that does not matter for the person that is affected and thinks it is a bad thing. So please stop calling people whiners because of it. It really doesn't help anyone and places you in the same boat as genka....

I do not like the new changes except for the ship pricing but can see that they are necessary IN THE LONG RUN and as such will adapt and live with them.

And that is what you have to decide for yourself, will you adapt and see what it brings or stop because the new "rules" have removed your niche? I have faith that Inc and the crew will listen to reasonable complaints and follow the changes closely, ADJUSTING along the way if that is needed.

Darnt, I used way more than two cents here. Gotta go sell a ship with 1000% profit. Gotta love the new XC prices...
Oct 12, 2008 Pointsman link
Well, I don't expect B8 to be impinged much by the new prices. People may use different ships, but they will still be there.

The new scheme isn't *that* punitive.

I kind of agree with your point Hortan, but the recent changes have made MY VO playstyle impossible (yes, impossible, but you wont hear me threatening to quit) so when I see people say things like "change it back, or I will not renew my sub" just because they have to pay a bit more to play like they always have? Well, it kind of winds me up.
Oct 12, 2008 Whytee link
I understand that yoda. It messed my play up as well but I hope that in the end it will be for the better. Otherwise I am sure the devs will change it to something that works.

And I agree that the "change it or I will quit" argument is not valid. Nor should it ever be!

I flew a Vulture Mk2 for a bit yesterday, and let me tell you guys.. it isn't the end of the world. No, it isn't a biocom or an SVG or a vulturius, but goshdarnit the PvP is just as much fun in a Mk2, and the price of THAT ship is the same as the old ships! Nothing changed except the letters in the name of my ship.
