Gap between Haves and Havenots Widens in VO

@ Aramarth

Long time ago, it was 2004. I was grinding bots for months to get my levels up so I could be able to buy IDF Valkyrie.
When I finally got it It was everything I hoped for.
Top speed of 240, fast and agile. Finally I was able to put up a decent fight with packs of scary Serco SCPs that were terrorizing everyone in grey.
I loved that ship, no matter that devs nerfed its biggest asset: 240 top speed, I still love it and would not settle for anything else to go into combat with.

VO is a game. A game I play to get rid of RL problems, frustrations and stress, a game where i can fly my favorite ship and fight enemies, relax and have mindless fun.

So now you are telling me to frack off and use a vulture. Sure, I can fight in a vulture but I wont be happy. I don't like vultures i love IDF valk. You don't want me to have fun playing VO? You want me to play by your rules? Who are you to impose your playstyle on others?

You can still use a Valkyrie if you want, Bojan. Nothing is stopping you.

@Slime
I wont be able to afford it.
Trading and mining bores me to death and I play VO to have fun not to get bored.

Take an escort mission every time you want to move somewhere at least a system away.

Awe, looks like Bojan wont get in THC then :/

I reject these false "all or nothing" arguments. VO can have more depth without being a soul-crushing simulation of RL. The forum contains years of posts that complain of VO being space-quake, and that death has no meaning - this is the beginning of changing all that.

Many of us adopted a particular style of play because, frankly, not much else was (is) available. The changes to the economy bring renewed purpose to trading and mining as well as new pain to death. The latest changes are just a small part of a larger and more interesting feature set.

Judging by the players online graph, the demographic is not very large or broad as it stands now. For VO to continue to exist, it needs to evolve. Few people are going to continue to play this game if it stagnates here. The game would languish, and everyone would lose interest - perhaps even the devs, who have a vision of what VO should become.

The great thing about VO is that it is always evolving. The devs might add something fun next week, or might mitigate a prior change as a result of well thought out suggestions from the player-base.

i dont think anyone disputes ship costing more. but more that there's a net imbalance of their costs versus the return on fighting activities (be it pvp, pvb, bs, bp, ctc).

unless you subject yourself to trading/mining, there's no way to make it even.

and people like bojan and i, truly dont like trading/mining.

if traders/miners were forced to buy their equipment from fighters, there would be some dynamics to the economy. eg, traders/miners would be forced to form alliances with fighters and fighters would have to feed this alliance with supplies in order to fund their activities.

This is good for pirates though eh? Not only will people now be more willing to part with credits to spare their ship and cargo, but now they (pirates) can charge a bit more.

We've always meant for fighters and traders to work together. Traders would hire fighters to defend them and in return would get paid. Having traders have to purchase certain weapons from fighters would help create an economic alliance.

I don't know what the big deal is. Yes, ships are more expensive, but they still aren't so bad as to make things miserable. You only need to do a few escorts missions to make enough to PvP your heart out all evening long, and I'm talking less than 10 minutes of escort and/or procurement missions. Just take an escort missions as you move system to system, and you'll have credits to spend on the ships you want. You don't have to change your game play style and become a trader or miner. It is non sense folks claiming that they are going to have to become traders and miners to support their PvP habit and therefore the game will be boring. Less than 10 minutes of escort and/or procurent missions PvP'rs and you got your money to PvP with for an evening if not more. Unless you really, really stink at it like me and then you might need to either work at getting better or trade more.

edit: Oh and there is this too if implemented...........

Hell, I hired a trader today to bring me some cargoes, I even killed a pilot in Azek J-1, but it was hard, Yes, I am having to adapt my play style, but I will adapt, and I will win (whatever that means)

I feel kinda good that I got sent to grey space though, I feel it's where I should be, specially as I seen folk mining in empty bot sectors in Odia, thats just wrong, more of us should hunt em down.

Oh well, I am not allowed to whine, my new guilds charter is about not whining, you know, guild politics and that, but hell, adjust, we all knew change was coming.

I do suppose it should be noted that as a pirate I easily make 500K in about 20 mins popping voys... Not all that hard, no consequences in gray space, the loot can be amazing, and you are still fighting the convoy guardians. But yes, I would say that military pilots deserve a salary or rewards per kill to keep them afloat "I'm a fighter, not a trader..."

And keep an eye on the suggestion forums to see what changes are coming next. (the devs can't really release all the changes they might want to all at once)

I welcome the portents of capitalism. When I do play, I seriously rarely have more than 200,000, and I would rarely do a real mission.

You want pirates to be a real threat? Now that trade is really important, there's a reason to attack people for their cargo. This will get even better as more economic changes come, like real supply and demand.

You don't want VO to be a perfect simulation of real life? Well, the sad fact is that real life is driven by the flow of goods and money, and it will be the same in any role-playing game. If money and death mean nothing, then the game means nothing. I've been wanting something like this since I discovered the game!

Also, I take issue with the name of this thread: "Gap between Haves and Havenots WIdens in VO." The implication is that capitalism and meaning to money is bad. Will the gap really widen? I think it will narrow. Now, we have super-rich people whose money means nothing, and people like me who have almost no money.... because money means nothing. Now, when I come back to the game at some point (between semesters, probably), I will be sure I do things for money. This isn't like real life in that during hard times money is hard to come by, there are plenty of jobs in VO. Any unemployed are that way by choice.

Let the socialist whiners leave the game, we'll replace them with new players who discover this game with a more dynamic economy and are properly impressed.

Up with the hammer and sickle flag.

Once that is there, I completely agree whistler. Let us see how it goes, and in a month from now if it is still the talk of all of VO, maybe it was wrong/too much.

yoda, can I be in the guild?

Well, the gap can't really WIDEN, since the monied individuals don't gain any interest on their money, so they have to work JUST as hard as you do to get money. As soon as you can afford a Behemoth, you're essentially able to make JUST as much money as the richest TGFT Trader.

Why don't any of us get interest on our money, by the way? I want something for my money in deposit over at Orion Savings & Loan.

AND: If I had had 10,000 Centurion Rev C's, would I be able to sell them now for 50000 cr each? DAMN I could have made a killing...
