I just ordered myself a new 12" PowerBook--1 GHz G4, 512k L2 cache, 80 GB HD, 512 MB of RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5200. Now, my question... will the GeForce FX Go 5200 chip support r_glow? From what I understand the "Go" series of nVidia cards are actually less powerful than their desktop counterparts (FX 5200). Having recently sold my 700 MHz iBook with 16 MB ATI Mobility Radeon, this is gonna be quite a big jump in performance. Ohhh I'm so excited.

The wireless mouse looks cool and all but it lacks a second button and a scrollwheel. Once you've used a mouse with those features, you sorta don't want to go back to the one-button mouse ever again. I wonder when Apple will finally wake up and provide such a mouse for us "pro" users. If they want simplicity, they can just leave the one-button mouse to iMac and eMac users. Why does Apple provide native support for a two-mouse button in OS X and yet not have any to sell?

The wireless keyboard is cool though. I like how they slimmed down the borders so it has a smaller footprint. But from what I understand both the wireless mouse and wireless keyboard require AA batteries. I'd much rather have my wireless peripherals be rechargeable, without having to replace the batteries every month or so. But hey, that's just me. Other than that... I think they're very cool and Apple is making a step in the right direction.

Bah, if I didn't have to live in a dorm I would've gotten a G5. I hate you!

*wipes brow* at least they didn't void my G5 purchase by rolling out 3.0's. My G5 arrives Thursday. :-D

I'm going to a dorm next year.... still gonna use it and take notes the old-fashioned way. :-P

My G5 just arrived at the Fed Ex distribution center (I check this, like, every twenty minutes), it should come late today or tomorrow. :-D

Sally Ride is very bitter that her less that two year old PB G4 is so hopelessly outdated. *Huff*

Kensington makes a great optical mouse with a scroll wheel and two buttons.

The Logitech MX310 is even better.

Sally, I have the Kensington wireless optical, and it's a very nice, stylish, piece of junk. When I finish recharging it, I have to whack the bottom of it to get the camera to stop blinking and hold a steady red glow. Sometimes, the base station fails to pick it up. Now, the base station refuses to recognize the mouse and I have to send it off to Kensington. I sure hope they give me a replacement.

Sally: you need to realise that apple updates about every 6 months so a new product won't be brand spanken new for a "long" time.

hmm... there is quite a battle raging about single- and multibutton mice.
there are professional mac users who don't want to have more than one button, and there are those who prefer the other extreme (i belong to the latter,... 8 buttons on the mx500 and a wheel).
i think they should have both in their product palette, and make it optional which mouse you want (maybe with a slight price increase for the multibutton mouse or vice versa... i wouldn't really know what's less expensive to manufacture).

I under stand 4 buttons. My mouse has 4 buttons, left click, scroll wheel click (middle click), right click, and left side click (acts like the back button).

But 8?

Oookay...

/me is perfectly content with his one button track-pad
On a desktop though, a multi-button mouse could have some uses, I suppose...

You know, there's a little bit of irony to this. Most Mac users today were sort of sucked in to the ease of use of the original Macs that were made. What Apple didn't realize was the fact that we were all eventually going to grow up and learn more and more about computers, making simplicity not so much a factor anymore. So Apple doesn't seem to acknowledge the fact that there are still Mac users here today who have been using their computers for many years now. We're talking users who have grown out of the one-button mouse and want more functionality with their devices. Yet Apple is still catering to newbies without giving a damn about its experienced users. Gah!

Hey, at least we've got third-party vendors like Logitech, Kensington, MacAlly, etc. to fall back on. Kudos to these companies. And kudos to Steve for at least bringing USB support to Macs. Too bad he didn't go a step further and provide Apple quality mice with the same functionality as the ones most third-party vendors make.

Relax. The one button mice are just "Apple Mouse"--Wait for the Pro offering. OS X supports mulitibutton/scrolls/forcefeedback/cheezewhiz dispenser mice and anything else you'd want, and Apple will oblige if people will buy.

I'm a "Switcher" myself, and the scroll wheel thing was a bit of an issue, and CTRL clicking was a bit silly when I first started, but these days I'm on my iBook, so I don't see it as an issue at all--I maintain about a dozen compaq and dell laptops at work, and I hate having the second trackpad button--I'm always hitting the wrong one (and don't get me started on pad tapping... >:-( ).

Fuctionality comes out of a simple UI, not from overly embelished hardware. People can handle 2 buttons--we already deal with 100+button keyboards, 50 or so per-hand, so bring on the buttons, or even a violin-style interface, or touch-senative self-modifying StarTrek console, users will adapt. The question is, does everyone really need it? The answer is, no.

Do you need it for VenDetta?

I just use my keyboard and trackpad. I tried using a joystick, but I missed my mouse-look in turbo.

Can you use the scroll wheel as a throttle in VenDetta?
