Try changing mpengine=1 to mpengine=0 in your config.ini file.
If that doesn't work, change these:
dovertexbuffers=1
doindexbuffers=1
to these:
dovertexbuffers=0
doindexbuffers=0

Changing the vertex and index buffers to 0 helps the framerate mostly, but still leaves the octree bug working its black magic at the absolute worst times -- I can't do anything meaningful in VO while running in OSX because it almost always occurs in a hive sector when there are bots attacking me.

I have neither of these issues when I run VO using XP/Boot Camp and DX9.

yeah, that's because opengl sucks in mac os x.

In Leopard, sure, but it was just fine in Tiger. Is it simply OpenGL being stupid, or might it be a driver issue?

I ran VO flawlessly for a couple months with Panther on my 14" iBook G4 (1.33Gh PPC, 750MB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics). To satisfy a job requirement, I installed Leopard the other day, after which VO was completely unplayable.

After reading through this thread, I made the following changes to my config.ini and VO is working much better (I can fly around, dock and shoot, anyway):

doshaders=0
dovertexbuffers=0
doindexbuffers=0
mpengine=0

I'll have to play for awhile to be sure, but at this poing it looks like I'll be able to reactivate my account. ;^)

Yo people, I'll be running Vendetta for the first time in a while. I had stopped playing after my initial 8 hour trial was up and now I have OS X leopard running on a Mac Mini Intel Core DUO at 1.66GZ of speed with 512MG RAM, and two external drives one with 80GB on a USB2.0 connection and my work drive at 250GB on my firewire port.

why does open gl suck on mac? just curious.
Dec 22, 2007 raybondo link
There are many ways to render polygons in OpenGL. The mac opengl drivers optimize a couple ways but don't bother to optimize any of the other ways. If you don't use opengl the way apple wants you to, stuff is sucky slow.

Ok, thanks. I did not kow that. I suppose that is one other area where Apple should provide better support for games.

Apple hates games and hates gamers
Apple could have a great gaming platform with and could optimize games for the hardware that go in the computers it would be alot easier to do than fer doze cause its all the almost all the same hardware

The way i see it Apple killed the Mac gaming industry before it even existed

They don't hate gamers, they just... don't pay attention to them.

Well if you refuse to water a plant the you killed it

Same goes for apple and mac gaming :P
Apple Killed the Mac gaming industry :P

The fact that there are games for the Mac means it's not dead. There would be no games without OpenGL, and Apple has kindly provided that. You shouldn't take BDPE so seriously. :P

What's helped for me the most so far is setting

doshaders=0

(with shaders off, shaderversion shouldn't matter, but 0 would be reasonable just in case)
I've noticed the difference especially in storms in the way the roids would appear, both with and without extended radar. I also do

dovertexbuffers=0
doindexbuffers=0
.
.
.
mpengine=0

Found this item refering to leopard and opengl and gaming that might be useful, especially as it deals a lot with that shaders thing:

Even so, can't do fun stuff like HS. :/

Lately (since upgrading to Leopard) I've been having strange fps problems. Whenever there is a CorvMaud on the screen, or certain parts of certain stations, my fps drops from its regular 100+ values down to around 25. It doesn't happen with most stations, just some (like Bractus D-9, for example). Is this the same problem, or related somehow?

Also, whenever I switch from windowed to fs or vice versa VO suddenly gets unbelievably laggy and has to be restarted before it goes back to normal. I actually think it's changing the resolution that does this. Any ideas? I've tried a bunch of the stuff on here already, just wondering if anyone had better knowledge or if I should just keep on trying things. Thanks!

Edit: Changing shaders and vertex buffers to 0 works like a charm, guess I shoulda tried it in the first place!

diqrtvp: A big contributer to fps drop on Macs in roid sectors is the presence of "popcorn" or, "neckbone" roids:
