joelsama, you still haven't answered my question why you think it would be so terrible to divide the military ships we have now, but you still want to add new nation-specific ones.
Forgive the shameless self-thread necromancy, but I wanted to bump this for Louis in particular. Even if we end up keeping most of the military fighter craft international, I really, really think it would be a good idea for each nation to have their own unique military cap ship designs reflecting their culture and technology. I'm not sure if he's designing the new cap ships with a particular "look" for each nation or not, but I wanted to throw that idea out there.
Yes. Ideally, each faction would have it's own ships, with a few generic ones that were crossovers.

I agree that factions should have their own version of every ship out there except for the explicit nation specials (I was too tired to read through the whole thread).
Of course that would apply to capital ships, as well.
Therefore, I agree.

Err... Toshiro is, umm, kind of disagreeing, as far as I can tell. Go back and read the thread, and try again. :S
Phaserlight: I'm with you on this. Maybe the cut-down version of your idea where there's only one unique ship for each nation (by ship, I mean, say, the Centurion, not just the "Itani Border Guardian" variant), and adding to the collection of nation-specific ships as the new ones are made.
The idea of slightly powered-up nation-specific variants that we have at the moment bothers me. Sure, they're different (slightly, in the numbers only), but we really need to make the differences between the nations more obvious.

Here's the thing.
Basic fighters get around... Nation-specific variants aren't copied by other nations.
Cappies would NOT be copied by another nation because they would not fit that nation's design philosophy.
That being said...
Serco- I want to see something big and mean looking... very mean looking
'tani- something smooth... sleek-ish...
UIT- something relatively utilitarian looking
Woot Luis!

We already have 'only one unique ship for each nation'...and that already has enough issues with balance.
I think the answer to this thread is just like the specialized ports. If you don't do it, you get more creativity. I don't see a gameplay reason for denying (or making it extremely difficult, which is worse) an entire low-level ship type to players. The only reason given is 'distinction' but that's not worth having to ship my hogs from UIT space to sedina.

There are normally roughly 30 people online... at this point I want to say 'who cares about balance?' I'd rather see the devs do something bold and let the balance work itself out later.
If I got my wish not only would each nation have its own unique military ships (cappies and fighters), but its own unique weaponry to a certain extent.

I think I made a pretty good argument back on page one, but in a nutshell it would add some diversity to the universe (spatially) and the nations (technologically). This isn't a stopgap measure as much as trying to give each nation a little more flavor.
Of course the devs can always add more ships and maybe one unique ship per nation is enough... but how many ships have been added in the past year? The point I'm trying to make is that there are enough ship models in the game right now for each nation to have it's own unique 'look' which I think we all agree is a good thing.

What if there were a mission you could take in Sedina that provided you with a UIT Hog to fly? I could be wrong but I don't think the 'moving stuff around' issue will be as much of a problem in the future... faction standing will play a more important role.

Hmm. I reread this thread, and I approve it now. I changed my stamp.
Heh. I agreed before without having read all of the thread (and for the wrong reasons), but it seems my instinct was right. I agree with it more so than before.
(Bumping old thread due to this hasn't been implimented.)
Faction based Ships would make the game much more enjoyable(I remade a character 3 times to look at the ships when I first started, and noticed nothing n.n;)

UIT Cappie should look like the Nostromo... only bigger. or maybe a Nebulon-B Frigate from Star Wars.
As for the Itani capship, I always envisioned it as looking somewhat like a Mon-Cal cruiser.
Organic...
The Serco cappie? I think the existing cappies look passably Serco already...
