You have to realize that the speed cap is a compromise of a great many factors, and for our purposes, it works quite well.

One factor is to keep speeds somewhat manageable. If two players were heading towards each other at a combined speed of 3km/s, then PvP combat would be very difficult indeed.

Another factor is space. There's only limited amounts of it. The server doesn't like dealing with incredibly large numbers, imagine: a if a player can somehow accelerate to 10,000m/s he'd reach the server's limit within a matter of minute. Of course, real space is infinite, but computers aren't, and you have to set limits. While players CAN go extremely far out into space, the Vendetta stops rendering objects at 64km (?). If you're going 1.5 km/s, you cross that distance in 42.6 seconds. Thus, you'd have to expand the universe, increasing the load on the server. I'm no computer genius, but I'd assume that this means that you'd have to reduce the maximum number of players supportable, reduce quality, reduce effects, etc.

I suppose, if you really want higher speeds, you could petition Incarnate to change the distance and speed units to kilometers as opposed to meters. Voila! You're going 1000 times faster!

Lofwyr, the acceleration of ships is more or less dependent on the ship's mass. If you have a large ship like a Ragnarok, you'll simply take a while to change directions. If you fly a Centurion like I do, directions change very quickly.

Yeah like I said, I agree, it's just fun to think about.

Switch to km??? Oh no, then instead of 180 for speed I'd be going.........0.18!!!! :P

I think you mean nanometers! Yowzers I'm going 60,000,000,000nm a second!

I think when he said 'replace meters with kilometers' he was talking about basically CALLING what is currently a meter a kilometer, so it feels like you're going faster :) I like the idea, because traveling 200m/s in open space seems ridiculous to me, but that might be a bit extreme in terms of acceleration and the human body (then again, with certain allowances in the storyline, it might not)... Anyhow, I figured adding a zero or two to the end of all speed readouts and measurements in game just for fun would be nice :)

the problem with that crippled is that we would all then be flying 1 person ships that were 11KM in length or longer. Also the stations would be increased on the same scale. (keep in mind that graphically nothing would change, it would just seem a little silly) What would be out of scale then are the asteroids. Also, why would any government give away a free ship (EC-88) that was over 10KM long.
