An alternative could simply be global being turned off by default, and people having to turn that one on for it to be used. Might get some of the kids off the air?
[edit]
well, if its the regulars acting like kids, I'd turn off my global chat .. one way or the other I'd get what _I_ want :)

/G wonders whom he should challenge to get some 1-1 action

It would get just about all the newbies off the air and the medium skill level and vets would still be cussing each other out.

I'd like to vote to petition petition petition petition petition. So uhh... that's my vote.
Actually, it usually is the vets that act like idiots on global chat. The newbie's egos haven't grown big enough yet. That comes later. I still think the main reason the global chat has so much whining in it is simply because the "t" button is the easiest to hit, so when someone gets wrapped up and emotional or trys to say something quickly it ends up on global chat. If /sector was bound to t instead I would see the problem being fixed. Basically, mine is an appeal to try out a moderate position instead of an extreme one.
this game definately isn't ready for that kind of chat, there really aren't that many people on at one time to really worry about something. Despite the fact that there is an increasing amount of tension in this game the fact remains that anybody here asking for this kind of abolishment really doesn't have a high temperment for the community. I know where you guys are coming from but broadcasted chat is easiest right now considering you only have to type "t".
edit: I also agree with magus' idea, that seems like a reasonable grey area to go with this situation.

I strongly believe that global chat must be removed from moving ships. I don't have high temperment for the community of griefers, whiners, flamers and offtopic chatters? I love them all more than anything, what are you talking about?
Solutions have been specified here, I prefer in station global chat to other stations, global team chat, in sector chat, group chat.
Hell, charge people 500 creds to send a message globally.
Think about it - you change the default bind on new installations and you really think old whiners will suddenly change their bindings as well? WTF?

Euhm,
what is the problem of binding /say_sector again to n and normal chat to t ?
dont see a prob in doing that. You dont think im going to constantly type say_sector when I want to type in sectormode :D. Hell no, thats to much hassle.
The reason why I voted agaisnt is because of the availability of to little testers at the moment. Sometimes there are 3 testers in 1 sec, sometimes there ae none, sometimes there are 20. If it are enough, then I agree global chat isnt needed, but when there are only 10 people on, from which 5 are botting and 2 are afk, then I can assure you that you are glad that global chat is available.
cheers
