Well, the quickest and cheapest solution to piracy is the old, slightly dreaded, Plan X.

Plan X Overview:

The nations rally to destroy the pirates through greifing them. The nations suspend hositlity against each other until threat is eliminated. The "coalition" stops greifing pirates only after they sware on their grave that they will cease that activity. They then reimburse 15% of all losses they have caused to the Coalition Provisional Council.

The Plan was originally drafted by the SDF Council but was never implemented since it required wide spread support and a larger command base. To form the Coalition Provisional Council, the CO and XO of the SDF plus the CO and XO of any other national military (of any participating nation) are included and vote on primary issues. Only those present at the vote time may vote, there is no absentee ballot.

Also, the SDF would maintain Veto power over some commands (Such as use of CPC funds). Any guild with over 8 members that was involved in the CPC would also be given Veto power (with the exception of the DSG which would recieve veto power despite lacking 8 solid members.)

So you want to eliminate piracy? Have fun playing Dance Dance Space Bass Fishing, where people sit around an asteroid and do nothing all day, every day.

Booooring.

I was joking and being sarcastic, I think the piracy adds to the game and, make it intersting. My problem is people getting pirating who do not yet know what they are doing very well (sub-100 score or so).
For example, when I got really frustrated getting pirated on my main accound, I create a new profile, and when I got to sector 7 I set it as my home system, dumb mistake... there was somebody camping there. Every time I went out, I got instantly killed, no warning, no cargo. I just deleted that profile and went back to the main one, realizing how luckey I was not to get killed en-route, not while becomng undocked.

A) I know Plan X wouldn't be used when I posted it
B) I knew Plan X wouldn't be used when I invented it
C) Even if people were interested in Plan X implementation, it would never work, it's too large and the logistics are insane!

The SDF barely keeps commo know with it's members, adding about 30-40 more people to that would totally destroy commo entirely, the SDF simply couldn't design and implement that kind of infrastructure.

I do agree with starfisher here, loans are more/less appropriate depending on the pilot. When money first became an issue Mordok kindly loaned me 20k (that was a LOT of money back then!) I built up my skills (which was much helped by Icarus letting me chase him around and practice my lvl2 rocket shots for a few minutes before anihilating me completely). Learned to trade and evade, and made the money back.

In the end, i went back to mordok with his 20k, and he told me to keep it. The only condition was that if i see another newbie, i should pass the 20k on, a condition that i faithfully stick to now when slipping newbs 100k or so.

so i dont think loans are that bad, just be careful who you give them to...

otoh I am a little bored of seeing leeches spamming the chat with "Can someone give me 50k" all the damm time.

I agree with ImNotHere that piracy makes trading far more exiting, but at this point in the game there is a glut of pirates compared to the number of traders. On any given day if you fly around you might see 2-3 traders and 6-8 pirates/griefers. The numbers are all wrong, in nature there's like 1 predator for every 10 prey. These pirates aren't killing for profit, they are killing for sport.

Hopefully the reputation system we are getting someday will change all that.

It won't change a thing unless it provides something else to do. I can make oodles of money trading, but all it is is a field in a database somewhere. I have to use it on something for it to translate into fun, and right now the only way to use money is to buy a ship and fight.

What about Duals? They are fun =D They are also more fairish and don't hurt people who do not want to become involved.
