Jerk Test Feature?

I think that one of the main problems of Vendetta is the the jerks who play and kill newbies who have not yet fully learned to play yet. I won't name any names but, I started played a few days ago, when I started playing I managed to get somebody to give me a 3K credit loan, so I filled up on cargo and headed to another space port in the starting ship, halfway there I got killed, a few loans and many ships later I managed to be able to support myself, but the rampant killing of newbies is a problem, it almost made me stop playing this game. There are not many real solutions to the problem, but one of the way to get rid of the immature jerks is to charge money for the game, turning some of them away. Dispite the fact that this game is still in Beta, I think its perfectly playable and, perhaps having a faster server, that you need to pay to access along with a public one would be good, it would generate money for the devolpers and have the game much more playable.

Dude, this has been discussed many times on multiple different threads. Please read around a little bit before you post.

Thank You.

I looked around on the first page a of the fourms and most of the threads on that, I am sorry I did not read the entire fourms archive before posting my first post, I will no do it again.

There are lots of real solutions to the problem.

Most of the good ones however require extensive work to implement. In the mean time, simply keep practicing. What you describe has happened to everyone. Actually, its much less of a problem now than it used to be. Back before there were nasty defence bots, I remember when sector 4 (the blue 'training' sector) was regularly haunted by 6 or more Golds looking for easy PKs.

Yeah, I suppose sectors 3 & 6 are relatively safe, I should just stay out of populated areas that earn more money.
Feb 01, 2004 Celebrim link
Well, yes, basically you should.

Even in a full universe, there would still be this problem. You don't expect in a Everquest style RPG to arrive as a new character and then be able to head off into the wilds where the experienced players are to face Plutonium Dragons and Dread Chtullu even though its in those areas you'd expect to earn the biggest rewards.

Why not? Because with big rewards come big risks, and everyone knows that when you are first starting in an RPG you have to think small.

The point that it has been discussed is fascinating, the fact that this thread was created is pointing out that the problem still exists.

well said celebrim,

ImNotHere, I highly recommend using the following tactics when trading/peacably flying:
1. press "u" every time you enter a sector to get a quick glance at who is in the sector. do this before anythign else.
2. bind your 'target nearest enemy' key to something you can hit constantly. it defaults as "X" and if that works for you use it. tap it every 3 seconds or so, if you get someone who is closing on you in a hurry, pivot to look at them and back away if they get closer than 500m.
3. watch your radar, if a red dot suddenly goes from dull red to bright red and a lot of little yellow dots appear over top of it, change course immediately, strafe up or left and try to point your ship at that dot on the radar. if it's a rocket attack, it's much easier to dodge if you can see the shots.

I fly that way, remember you're not really paranoid if everyone truly IS out to get you. :)

I guess the only question remaining then is, when do we start? =)

Spellcast's recommendations are excellent. I start a new character every few days and use those tactics constantly. I'm a bit more wiley than the average new player, but I seldome lose more than one cargo load each day.

I would add that you should never fly a ship you can't afford to replace into the major trade lanes, and you should never invest your entire savings into a single cargo load. Lastly, you can still hang out in your nation's home sector and scoop up cargo from defense bots that kill themselves or eachother. It's just a little extra cash to get started with.

Mmmm - yeah, all said tactics work very well.
Oh, and if you ever see someone picking on you, /msg "Evhun Cerundir".

N00bkillers are TASTY! MMmm!

Thank you for all of the suggestions, now that I know what I am doing a bit more, I don't get killed nearly as often. And, now I can fill up my cargo and only spend a fraction of my money, but when you only have a few thousand, its hard to get started becuase one loss can set you back really far. Perhaps starting off newbies with more than 0 money could help the problem a little?

Excecpt that the idea of starting you off with 0 money is that you actually have to practice your flying and fighting to get some money and start the game.

If you just put up with the fact your in a free ship, and go pick on a low bounty bot, you can win after a few tries and lost ships, then you get some cargo to reward you for developeing flight skills.

Try not getting a loan and starting the game out. As you shouldnt need a loan to get started. If you keep at it and just lose some free ships you can still be in the biggest, fastest thing you want in an hour or less...

New characters start out with 0 to prevent them from becoming minable money resources. We don't want players creating new characters, dumping the money on a friend, deleting the character, ad infinitum.

What are you, an Oxfam advert?

Well, I understand that starting out with money could be exploited so, thats not a good idea, but perhaps a training sector that you have to graduate from then? Like 3 training sectors that you can't get out of until you get a certin amount of cash. Then, people would get a basic knowlage of the game before getting killed constantly =)

True, I flew around for about 30 minutes and did not find any cargo, and the NPC's destoyed me pretty fast. After getting a loan I got started pretty quickly, and after an hour I had enough cash to support myself and be able to take losses, its just durning that time it can get frustrating to lose everything.

i think you missed paedric's point.
i think what he meant was: if you learn how to trade, fight and act, you will have more chances of quickly getting good at playing vendetta. if you get a loan, chances are that you turn into a cheeky noob (not aimed at you personally, from what i read, you're pretty sensible).
Feb 02, 2004 paedric link
That was pretty much it Toshiro. Give a person a handout and they'll be back for more. Train them to survive in the universe and they wil be able to take care of themselves. What works in the real world does work in a game world such as this also.

I started a friend of mine off with a 100k loan. He promptly lost it on valks and vults.

Thre days later he sent me 200k credits he made trading in a maud. God only knows who showed him 18. (He was blue). Obviously the loan didn't turn him into a beggar.

How the loan affects a new player is dependent on that player's personality. It's probably better to not give out 100k loans to every newb, but on the other hand a few k isn't going to hurt, and will definately help a new player along. If they ask for more, just say, "One time only" and be done with it.
