A few million is deeply in the red, for me. I prefer to maintain a 50 - 100 million credit balance, and, like lnh, I believe my in-game "tangible assets" outweigh my liquidity (no cap ship yet, though!).
Fix the loopholes (static routes and infinimining [done]) (yes!)
There are still static routes in the game.
Oops. I meant infinimining was done. Not static routes.

I really wonder who are those rats who are so wealthy?
My bank account is skyrocketting at 30mil nowdays which is so huge.
i, like LNH, have a few ships collected in stations, mostly in space which i cannot access most of the time due to my peculiar standing management.
I also admit having abused the game because i have never purchased any item i sold to the stations.
Btw to support Piment's suggestion it will cost you now 2mil for safe passage in gray instead of one.
Best regards.... err i meant Yarr!
yer Beloved Capt'N Blood.

Hmm.. Piment never said 'rats...
There are players out there with billions of credits
I could name a few people... but I don't have proof, so I won't. Plus, I don't think we're supposed to name names here.
FWIW: An hour of work generally gives me enough cash to buy the ships and weapons I need to keep going.
So, it seems most people agree that people with overwhelming amounts of cash isn't a real problem worth asking the devs to address?

A credit and resource sink is needed
Because like for what players can spend billions of credits?
For me having even just 60 million creds is a lot
There are players with billions of credits they can't spend, and ores they can't use
New and expensive stuff would make rich players more powerful, but after spending a lot of money will feel scarcity(or not)
And stations full with ores can be emptied by adding something to the game what can use up the majority of it(new capships, buildable stations etc.)
We need new stuff anyway, and will come after some time, because without it players with billions never will feel scarcity like now.

While this is not about the inflation per se; I've seen many people that don't care about rules and just exploit everything they can. Then later on it gets fixed and no penalty for the abusers. This gives them a sense of "security" that if they do not follow the rules, there will be no penalties. Therefore, the intent to use such exploits/abuses will rise in popularity and use.
I'm not saying someone should be outright banned (unless they did big shit). If there are rules, there should be penalties if you break them. So my suggestion is to think about penalties and not give amnesty most of the time.
This will not remove those "illegal" gained credits, for that it would need a lot of work to find out who did what.
If you got enough credits, items get more important, at least for me. There are many rare (or even collector) items that cost hundreds of millions. Also with enough credits you can buy plenty of manu parts, if you want to.

I also think these hypothetical resource sinks will simply give the older vets something to do. At least the ones with untold billions they realistically cannot spend in any useful-to-them way.

Those two things you're suggesting are basically in opposition. How do you expect us to find out who has been abusing or exploiting systems, if we don't put in the work to.. figure out who has been doing so?
The reason why we don't do so is not because I'm pro-exploit, it's because it's really time consuming, and detracts greatly from game development. At one point, a few years ago, I realized I was spending 50% of my time, over a period of months, just chasing after dumb crap that 4-5 players had been doing in the game.
So, it's easy to say that we should "not give amnesty", but that doesn't magically generate the evidence to know who to.. not-give the amensty to? Figuring that out requires a lot of log analysis, and writing regular rexpressions and scripts to sift through gigs of data.

I'd support a server wide reset on the release of the 2.0 verse. Start fresh. Thatll fix "inflation"
...and cut your player base in half.
/me speaks from experience.
Edit to remove word "paying" ... because it isn't just paying players that don't want to start over.
