The idea of crystals forming due to overheating is definitely a interesting idea, however it would need to be balanced as it would no doubt ruin the game economy for f2ps.
I really like the idea of mining activity causing a "cloud" field around the roids, much like smoke from a fire.
If this were to happen, perhaps certain addons could be introduced that scan systems for said clouds, where only large clouds of major roid abusing miners are detected... this would allow people to seek and destroy the abusers.

Or what if when the roid got to 200k it just refuses to let you mine it until it cools down to at least 10k?
My corvus beams should allow me to mine it beyond your silly limits!
I like the idea of hot rocks being dangerous. Radiant heat is a simple explanation for the purposes of realism. Get close enough to something hot enough and you burn the hell up. It would probably help if hot rocks glowed, going from red to white along the same temperatures as say iron or carbon. Ice crystals do kinda strain the limits of suspension of disbelief however. I've never seen an ice cube at 30,000K.
Suspension of disbelief?
But, Aqean isn't ice, right? It's a crystal that can be used to generate water.
In my head, it's like any hygroscopic substance, heat it, or apply pressure, and it releases water. You can google "Water of hydration" or hydrates... there are some absolutely beautiful hydrates, and they can get VERY VERY hot.
I still like my "foggy roid" idea. Ejecta from roid mining causes a cloud of debris around the asteroid that gets worse the longer it is mined. As the asteroid cools, it collapses back into itself. fuzzy/foggy=damage, and slower mining.
Added benefits to risky mining (mining fuzzy/foggy roids) to yield crystals (for f2p) or high-value gems for subbed players at some low chance.
Pivot the problem, rather than roasting roids being seen as abusive, let's challenge and roll with the behavior and make it a component of game play.
