I should start out by saying I know very little about android devices. I would like to see more flight worthy targets out there however. I can only assume that better control over what your ship is actually doing might help with that, maybe.
Since mouse on android is basically a no go.
What about game pads and joysticks? Specifically CHEAP ones. I have no idea if it would be worth the work, but looking at your post here https://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/7/27597 a good number of them seem to fall in the 30-50 dollar range. I do not have ANY idea what percentage of the mobile player base has them before trying VO. However, purchasing a 30 dollar game pad to try out a 'free to play' game, seems kinda off to me. A 10-20 dollar one, not so bad and if they are listed as 'working, atleast usually.
Perhaps listing in that post and probably somewhere better like in the game itself somehow, maybe in the help button under controls in the settings menu or something a few really cheap controllers that have been tested to work with VO.
Having some easy way for users to load up different control bind setups that can even be user submitted (maybe via the PCC) that others have found to work with that particular controller. Simple drop down menus for at least the most common controllers. I have this controller, CHECK. What are the most popular flight control binds for it, oh here is a list of about 10, I'll try one of them.
Come to think of it, having a list of way half a dozen touchscreen control setups to choose from (option a option b etc) probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Something like that would allow a decent percentage of mobile players to find something close to what they want somewhat faster.

The challenge with cheap controllers is that they have QA problems more often, and don't work reliably, which the user then blames on the game. We get this even with the occasional SteelSeries defects on the shoulder buttons.
The multi config touch controls is an old idea (of mine, even) but it's more challenging to figure out what they should be. We did some player surveys, and it often ended up being highly personal. Plus, the complaints are more about control reaction speed and other factors than layout, at least of late. Anyway, yes, aware of that option.

Then maybe integrating a method whereby you can modify and change the controls yourself. Currently android has no way of binding a control to anything really - isnt mobile all about being mobile, not needing peripherals? hehe
Basically something like droidbuttons but a built in version.
