Bumped: Reason, it was posted right before GS announced that it ran out of money so I'm not sure you guys got a chance to look at it. I think it's worth while because there are a number of different (probably mutually exclusive) ideas that may give you guys ideas that are ten times better than what we suggested. So I hope it was atleast a little helpful because it probably took you a long time to read through.

I think we should make petition to rename the rader into lidar ..

... another petition?
surely you jest.

Yes he does. This is not a demand of the devs, but an attempt to give them more material to use in their creative process of bringing this game into a sellable state.

Wow, I think I missed this thread.

Two questions/comments:

Celebrim, what use is a cloaking device that can only sustain cloaking abilities for roughly 5 - 10 seconds (based on battery)? You say it would require the same amount of power consumption as boosting does. Are you proposing extra batteries, capacitors, reactors, or some other power device?

Secondly, the idea of LOS-based, in-sector chat is cool. If I'm chasing a trader, and he jumps behind one 'roid in the middle of a huge asteroid field, I could sacrifice the position of my ship by putting out a 'loud,' all-frequency warning something along the lines of "give me 25% of your cargo or die."

Nice suggestions, I remember when I had enough time to write things this long...

I don't know, you tell me what use being able to cloak for 5-10 seconds would be?

But nowhere did I suggest that you could only cloak for 5-10 seconds. If you equip you ship with a fast charge battery and an efficient engine, you can stay cloaked indefinately. Even with a heavy battery and a medium engine, you could stay cloaked for like 55 seconds. Of what use would that be? I don't really know the answer to that question either, but I'm sure someone would find some use of it especially with other ways to hide as well.

"Are you proposing extra batteries, capacitors, reactors, or some other power device?"

I have proposed a variaty of things like that, but they are quite independent suggestions with no direct bearing on this one.

Let me just say, this is a DAMN FINE idea and I hope that a amalgamation of what Celebrim and Eldrad suggested comes into being. I LOVE being a thief! :) And I LOOOOVEEE SNIPING. :)

my thoughts echo furball... very well thought out stuff guys

Well, that's another problem with stealth systems: By the very nature of the human body, any environment that's warm enough to keep you alive will show up like a phosphorus flare on the radar against the cold of space. The void is the perfect situation for infrared to be at its most effective, and I see no real way that someone could hide their body heat. I suppose that there are toys on both sides of the issue:

1) Infrared sensor. Declared illegal for civilian ownership by decree of both the Serco and Itani governments. Thus very expensive, but attainable.

2) Heat Concentration/Ejection System. This device reflects all of your ship's heat inward to a core in the engine for a short time, and fires it at near lightspeed in a direction of your choice. For the minute or two that the device is active you are invisible to infrared. Once the metal core gets near-molten (~1:40) it must be ejected or serious damage to the ship will occur. While the ammunition is almost as cheap as railgun rods, the device itself must be built into the hull of the ship at time of manufacture. This device is likewise illegal for civilian use according to both the Serco and Itani governments.

3) Stupidity
Manufactured by humanity as a whole, stupidity allows a player to sit between the sun and the player's foe, hoping to disguise his infrared signature, but instead casting a large optical shadow all over the sensor dish of his pursuer. Nice job, genius.

bumped because the topic has come up again.

Thats will be something really interesting :)

But when you are powerred down, you should be able to get almost OVER the other ship unnoticed (on the back ofcourse).

Im looking forward to see this improvement in vendetta :)

finally read the entire thread.
nautrally, players knowledgable about the radar systems can become skilled snipers, thieves, pirates...
but has anyone imagined how interesting this would make huge battles in groups? (I know Celebrim began this thread with the idea that large battles + fighters shouldn't be the only fun roles, but hehe)
ambushes, sneak attacks/cap attempts, warring sides keeping scouts in certain 'favourable' locations on the asteroid belts to keep their teams informed... maybe even toys like 'smoke', distractors to throw off the radar and sensors as opposed to simply cloaking

mouse, you're completely right that this would allow people to conduct tactical military maneuvers as well as individuals sneaking etc.
Can you imagine 20 ships silently drifting across a sector with their engines trying to flank their unweary opponents. Stopping behind a roid to change their trajectory in its shadow... it'd be tons of fun.

I can imagine a single lonley trader hiding ina pale of rocks, powered down, waiting a listening for a bunch of pirates to pass by... One false move and he's toasted :)

Ok.. Take the facts. Outside the ship is -273 degree.. inside is.. let say about 20 so it's almost 300 degree of diffrence. If there will be some kind of a device that keeps cabin warm it's ok for me, but if hool is just a very good izolator, there is no need for that. Moreover, no heat could (in any possilbe way) get out of the ship, which made an infrared sensor useless.

Ok.. and now why im opposite: it would be way too good.
You just sit at the middle of the sector, and scanst everything (since ships could only hide form it for about 60s per shot) you can sit and wait till they are run out of ammo...

I agree with Ciuciu it's nearther realistic nor balanced for game play.

What I really want to see is the burned out hulks of dead ships. There could literally be "ship graveyards" where huge battles were, and a perfect place to powered down pirate to take refuge.

I get the oddest sense of deja vu...
Apr 08, 2004 Forum Moderator link
Ya...why didn't YOU think of that, CT?

Anyway, even if we assume that no heat could escape the ship's insulation and that heat emmanated by the engines and so forth could be directed inward, there is still the absorption of radiant heat from any nearby sun. Consider that satelites spin and that the space shuttle has to have its bay doors open to deal with such heat. That would show up against the surrounding chilly space.

Heh, I had this big long response written, but then Safari crashed and just said "screw it". Something about this gel they put in the spaceships, heating a house with a small candle, but it then getting to hot inside and having to open the door.

Rather than to delve too deeply into 'hard sci-fi' arguments, I'll put forth that I do believe that heat should be the primary aspect of stealth in space. Vision is nothing. Vision can be compromised easily without a pesky atmosphere to interfere with our vision.

As to the problems of someone just waiting for you to run out of ammo, what's to say that they won't just get themselves a cold beer and sit in the system as it is, waiting for you to move from the shadows?
