So I have seen posts about how there needs to be an alert or some such similar thing so pirates know when someone is trying to log off instead of paying.
How about if you log off while in your ship your cargo auto drops. This would make ppl think twice about trying to log if they have a valuable cargo. I'm sure there will be some kind of issue with people who lose connection but have it triggered by the physical log off button is activated while in a ship, i.e. an action that occurs at say 1 second till log out.

This is what happens with the CtC ore currently, so I think it should be doable.

-1 There is no way to know if the player logging out did so under threat or not. I see no reason to penalize someone for having or wanting to log out without traveling to a station. Also, I don't know what other trident owners do, but I quite frequently log out with my trident in a random sector.

Of course greenwall is just attempting to make the game as friendly and forgiving as possible for his poor trader friends. Pirates' lives must be made as difficult as possible, and all newbs must be strongly discouraged from becoming pirates!

False.
1) I have made many pirate-benefitting suggestions, especially as of late.
2) I have an alt that is RPing as a pirate currently, and I find it the most easy and satisfying method of gameplay available at the moment. Pirates are in no way oppressed, and to assert as much only indicates a lack of knowledge of the current state of game play. Why don't you log in for once and see for yourself rather than "play" the forums, joyless?

OK so add a simple if statement
If noships within 2000m then normal log off else dump cargo at 1 second.
This way the multitude of players who like logging off in the middle of no where don't lose any cargo and those trying escape pirates lose their cargo.

I like this idea more than the first.

Huh? I never said that pirates are oppressed. Only that you would like to see that happen. Yes, you have an alternate in VOID, but I don't actually believe that you are there to genuinely RP as a pirate. You might demand payment and shoot down a few "helpless" ships for the show, but that's not your priority.
Do share with me the suggestions that you have made in favor of pirates, because I don't see any in the forums here.

@joyless
You insinuated that opposition to this post is equivalent to making pirate RP as difficult as possible. Thus, opposition to this post would be equivalent (in your mind) to subjecting pirates to unjust treatment, especially in relation to other RP styles. Now be a good little boy and use your webster's dictionary and look up what 'oppressed' means. Then kindly fuck off. Once you've done that, kindly fuck off again for not being able to read.
Thanks bro!

Greenwall and Joyless: Stop responding to one another, and only respond to the specific topic at hand, or I will ban both of you from Suggestions.
Back to business:
The OP is such an incredibly minor irritant to a small group of people, especially in the face of so many other much more important needs.
I appreciate the intent to find a different way of addressing the "are they logging off or not?" guesswork, but this still (like other related suggestions) will affect people who are not in a situation where the original problem would be present. Namely station sectors -- what if you initiated log off while nobody was in the station sector, and then someone popped in 1 second before you logged but you didn't notice? Then whatever cargo you had would drop and you would have no idea it did. Also, many newbs aren't aware if they are sharing the sector with anyone (thanks to lack of situational awareness information without plugins). So they will log off all the time only to give their cargo unknowingly to whomever happens to be near them.
CTC cargo is specially protected to avoid cheating at the CTC competition (stockpiling while offline). No such protection is needed for standard cargo.

There needs to be a visual indication of log-off, but this is just too weird.

Make the ship fade in and out with a semi-transparency.

I still don't see what's wrong with simply displaying a message if a player starts to log out within 1000-2000m of you. It preserves the necessary functionality (logging out outside of a station) while completely eliminating the exploit.
If a player disconnects, a notification should also be displayed, but their ship should persist for at least 10 seconds after the game realizes that they have disconnected.

Don't you want free capship parts, hawk?
Make all ships persist for 5 minutes like tridents do?
My point is, I'll get the capship parts either way. This way is clunky and defeats the original purpose of being able to log out in space. The way suggested before doesn't change anything but the exploitability, makes perfect sense, and nobody has given any good reason why it shouldn't be implemented.
-1. Better and more general solutions to this kind of problem have been suggested previously, such as announcing logoffs, preventing logoffs near players, persisting ships, etc.
