I would like a lua function that will manuever and auto-dock a ship if a station is present in the sector.
This would allow for a warehouse type of bot to be made and shouldnt be very exploitable. Most of the software should be availible - just treat the player ship as an NPC and dock it like the normal npcs do.
I want a bot that can launch, dump cargo and then redock.....by remote control.
The ability to pick up cargo would also help..but thats later

-1, would make an external auto-pilot program way too easy. I've already cobbled together an auto-pilot that can navigate to a wormhole or storm exit and jump through just fine, if a bit more slowly than a human pilot. It was pretty easy. I haven't tried docking yet, but I expect that would be a lot harder. If this lua function were added, I could slap it in, add some polish, and set it loose to trade or run escorts autonomously 24-7.
Definitely not, this game should be in no way completely automated.
Actually an external auto pilot would not be possible....
it would only be able to dock a ship and nothing else.
It would not allow piloting betwen sectors or systems.
It would not allow any nav data to be in player hands.
It would onl;y work for a ship already at the station.
And it certainly would not allow for combat.....

I'm sorry, sir. Your reading-comprehension appears to have malfunctioned. I hear warranties can help with that.
But to clarify: I don't mean that this suggestion would enable all that other stuff. I mean that all that other stuff is already easy, but that docking is not easy. So I can't just whip together a fully automated trade bot in an afternoon. I can whip together a fully automated travel bot in an afternoon, but it wouldn't be useful for much. (And to reiterate: I have already done this. It worked. Spuck has done it as well, I believe (see dullbot). So don't try to tell me it isn't possible.)
If your suggestion were to be implemented, docking would then be trivial, making a trade-bot no more difficult than a travel bot, which as I have just established, is easy.
Anyway, I'm not sure why I'm arguing this with you. I'm 80% sure you already know all this and are making this suggestion with the full intention of using it to build a mostly automatic trident building bot.

I thought this was a troll thread...
I'm pretty sure it is a troll thread.
Anyway, this one's pretty easy to implement.
function DockMyArse()
gkinterface.GKProcessCommand("Explode")
end
This'll get you back in a station for sure.

In truth, an auto pilot is already very doable today in LUA without any external programs. You might die a lot but it's very doable. Auto docking just seems silly. I don't even like the fact the fact you don't have to press activate anymore. (Or that they reduce collision dmg)

Meh.... I figured it was better then creating a docking program the devs cant control......
Hilariously exploitable, I assume this is for the PA insult bot that flys around Latos pretending to be a gangster or whatever?
You mean their CO?
The role play forum is elsewhere... Dont clutter up threads unless you have something to actually contribute.
Exactly what exploits do you think are going to happen that cant already happen?
If a travel bot is what your worried about it is possible to only allow docking of ships that have not left the sector or for the devs to only allow docking for a special version xc that cant jump anywhere.
The point is to have a way to implement shared storage with the transfers all taking place outside of the station.

Even if you were being honest, which you are clearly not... that is the worst implementation a shared storage idea ever.
Your self serving crap is, as always... blatantly transparent.

Currently, docking your ship is the only really "difficult" problem preventing the full automation of a mining and trading bot. Finding a specific asteroid and getting within 100m of it has already been done. Trade and travel is even easier because all you have to do is keep flying until you get 3000m clear of the station and asteroids.

^ what arf said.
You would have the fricken SCIN army out tanking prices of stuff and all manner of horiffic things!
Think of the children!

Also I'll have you know that the DockMyArse() function is a copyrighted trademark of spidey's buttloving corporation.
TL;DGAF: this shit ain't gonna happen in a million years.

And arf as I said - if the devs do it then they can control what is allowed.
A simple xc that cant jump is all thats needed for my purposes.
@spidey - My appologies, I should have checked the registry of lua functions more carefully.
@Ryan - Quit yer whiney baby arsed trolling. Dont you have something better to do then obsess over me?

Yes... voice my objections to your obvious attempt to make a trade bot. Your incessant whining and denials are an insult to the devs and player's intelligence. The fact that you believe anyone is stupid enough to believe you is a sad commentary of your intelligence.
"If a travel bot is what your worried about it is possible to only allow docking of ships that have not left the sector or for the devs to only allow docking for a special version xc that cant jump anywhere."
No, a travel bot is not what we're worried about. Pay more attention. For the third time: travel bots already work. It is a trade bot that we are worried about.
And the above would still exploitable. If you restrict the ships that can auto-dock, that just means you have a normal ship do the transporting with the auto-travel code, then when it gets to the destination, approach the station and dump the cargo. Then automatically logout and log back in with a different character homed at that station and set to use the auto-dockable ship. It would go out, use the auto-travel code to scoop the loot, and then auto-dock via lua.
"as I said - if the devs do it then they can control what is allowed."
Nope. Implementing a neutered version doesn't do a single thing to prevent me from writing my own. It would either have no impact, or it would make it easier. In no way would it make it harder. So no, it would not give the devs more control. It would give them less control.
"The point is to have a way to implement shared storage with the transfers all taking place outside of the station."
If that is true, then you are trying to swat a mosquito with a stick of dynamite.
Any suggestion that involves an automated way to move cargo that is outside the station to inside the station will be extremely exploitable. You would actually have better chances of convincing the devs to implement shared storage with in-station transfers.
