[[[Just because there is no MMOG that does not require grinding doesn't mean it's a necessity (and there are quite a few MMOGs that try to avoid grinding like the plague - success is mixed, of course). So it's possibly you who's absolutely completely wrong, I think...]]]

Possibly I am wrong, or possibly grindind _CANNOT_ be _COMPLETELY_ avoided. No matter how You avoid grinding, You still always need it.

Actually, why the hell are we arguing about grinding at all. I (almost) completely agree with You here. Grinding SHOULD be avoided. But it cannot be _completely_ avoided.
.
.
[[[And you like games with little bar pushing - but you want to add more of it to VO? Errrrrr... helloo inconsistency!]]]

I NEVER said i like games with bar pushing !!
Where did you deduct it from ? You're putting in my mouth things that i never said.
Perhaps You completely misunderstand what i want.
.
.
[[[And you can get pretty good stuff (albeit for higher prices) without leveling at all, in VO. You just have to know how to. And that you can learn by asking. See? No grind required.]]]

Yeah, but only if some players are WILLING to tell You about the "mystic ways", or give You the stuff.
So essentially, If You're a n00b and You don't know that, You still WILL grind to get it.
.
.
[[[Oh, I see what you did there. You propose a system which has been used in other games and call it 'thinking outside the box' and 'imagination'.]]]

Again, don't push this bullshit on me. I never said i want that.
My proposition is just LOGICAL CONCLUSION of existing vendetta skill system (combat/trading/mining/weapons).
So if there already are skills, why not add another one to simply create _more possibilities_ ?
.
.
[[[And disagreeing with a suggestion because I think it's unnecessary is, in fact, valid. Just like the fact that you are in love with your idea doesn't make it automatically the best idea there is.]]]

Perhaps, but that's still a very bad argument. Ignoring something just because of Your caprice, is not very logical or anything.
.
.
[[[Untrue. By creating a "new and improved" crafting system, you effectively invalidate the "old and decrepit" crafting system.]]]

No, this will not invalidate old crafting system, because You will still be able to use it.
.
.
[[[Quote form your original post: There are some very good weapons, eqipment, perhaps ship prototypes that only an player-engineer can build. It cannot be bought elsewhere in the galaxy. Soo... how good are these 'very good' items? Better than the one you can craft with missions? Then why do crafting by missions at all? About the same? Then why do it in the first place?]]]

That feature is required because it would simply be pointless to create a new skill system if it won't give You any new benefit. it's simple as hell - why the hell would You invest Your time in improvement of a new skill, if there's no benefit for doing so ? However this still does _not_ "invalidate" the old system, because You can still use it.

It just gives You NEW, previously unexistant possibilities, without breaking the old ones. The thing You're talking about is _not_ "invalidating" - it's just GAME BALANCE CHANGE. Yes, the balance would certainly change, but You still could do all the old stuff in the "old ways".

@Dr. Lecter

[[[LOL WUT]]]

Well, perhaps for You fighting is not tiring because You had like hundereds or thousands fights. Practice makes perfect.

But for me, after hour or 2 of constant PvP combat, my fingers/hand just hurts from handling the Joystick/keyboard. It doesn't happen with bots, because bots are just stupid so You don't have to do a lot to avoid their fire.

@CrazySpence

Nice list, but Your logic is almost completely flawed. Let me explain why.
All the player activities in the game consist of 5 basic activities:

a) Flying around / space exploration
b) Combat
c) Trade (selling/buying)
d) Mining
e) Social activities (interaction with other players)

And EVERY thing on the list You made are ONLY combinations made up from these 5 basic activities.
Yes, when You create all the possible combinations, You may get infinite number of options. But these options are not "new", they are made just by combining the existing base activities. And because of that, some people may see them as boring.

What I am proposing, is adding completely NEW type of activity to this basic 5. An ACTUAL/REAL Construction/production/manufacturing (not some mission-based pseudo production). So, after i add one more element to the basic 5, You will get another 50 things on Your "to-do" list by combining existing options with the new element.

Your list explained:
1) flying + combat + some trading = been a crazy rogue semi rat
2) (don't know what's that) The Hog King
3) flying + combat = Hive killer
4) flying + combat = border fighting person
5) flying + combat = War voy destroyer
6) flying + combat = War voy defender
7) flying + combat (+ social ?) = CtC king (not lately)
8) flying + combat (+ social ?) = Convoy escort
9) flying + trading = Procurer
10) flying + trading = Manufacturer (only the firecrackers cause they dont have an absolutely ridiculous amount of things to collect)
11) flying + combat (+ social ?) = station attacker
12) flying + combat (+ social ?) = station defender
13) flying + combat + trading + mining = I have made some Difficult choices (mission)
14) flying + combat = Nation war'd
15) flying = Raced the universe
16) flying + combat = shot people racing the universe
17) flying = tube raced
18) flying + combat = killed 50 people in a bus
19) flying + combat = got the old school ec88 in that fancy mission tree
20) flying + combat + trading = upped my standing with various factions to get their special equip (theres a couple weeks of stuff to do right there)
21) social = Joined a guild
22) social = became council on said guild
23) social + flying + combat = Had a hog gang (few years back)
24) social + flying + combat = Tease pie rats
25) social + flying (+ combat ?) = party moth
26) flying + combat + mining + trading = Made about a dozen missions that are in game
28) combat + social = Defended my asteroid field
29) combat + social = defended my star system (pelatus)
30) combat + social = Dueled
31) (this is not a normal player activity - it's for programmers) = wrote a pointless plugin in Lua
32) combat + social = Nationalist

Also, in my other proposition (tractor beam) i create a new type of sub-activity for trading (trading ships), which also creates A LOT of new possibilities, even that it is not a basic activity, just a variant of trading.

Paladin, we have this thing called an 'Edit Button.' It's quite useful.
Back on topic, I think some sort of manufacturing is cool. I'm fond of the system EnB uses. Get blueprint/whatever by analyzing the widget with X chances of success, failure means quality reduction or destruction of the sample. Get the blueprint, get the parts, pay a small fee to make the widget. Varying quality based on player skill level/part complexity? Higher quality would, obviously, give better stats, possibly better than 'store bought' to create demand for player-made stuff.

Just a thought
