Planets
In world renderd planets...I would like them and having them would open a miriad of possibilities (and a inworld rendern sun).
I know that it would require sectors with planets in them to be made into one (cause many times the planet streches over 4 or more sectors).
I belive that renderd planets would add tpo the gameplay, for example fi your are running from a pirate in a sector with a gas giant, you think damn im not gonna loose this guy, but then go for diving into the gas planet and atempting to loose the rat in there. Also racing could be help on planets and so on...AND i do not really want the planets to have anything on em..i just want em to be there.....
Well i got the whole idea while playing agame called Oolite...its old...very old, but i gotta say its got a few things that VO should pick up and develop further (like for example flying to the sun and insinerating yourself, lots of fun)
Heres a Link to the game (Oolite, its free)

Sorry if the posts a little mess..if you have any questions...well...ask...

hmm...should be possible, we've asteroids...and following your description a planet is a fat asteroid...with a nebula that sourrounds it.
the only "real" problem is, that a planet would move around the sun of a sector...so the planet would move through a bunch of sectors...slowly...
devs?

Eve does this very well - look to them for inspiration. It takes a long while to reach a planet though, even longer for a sun. The closest you can warp to them is something like 200,000km. I reached planets a couple of times in my fastest inteceptor but flying at them for about 3 hours (minimized the game and left it running at work). They aren't solid though, once 'inside' them they are invisible to you, so it looks like you're just floating in space. Useful for hiding though.
Planets are cool for the far future, for soon(tm)... there are much, much bigger fish to fry (dynamic warfare, faction redux, universe redux, etc...).
though I'd bet stars would happen before planets.
Also, please, dear god, read this thread:

Heh, and knowing certain members of the community-FLAMES DETECTED ON INBOUND COURSE.
BRACE FOR IMPACT!

This is another one so mind-breakingly stupid that I just can't comment, Shil.
if you flew into a gas giant you would be crushed by gravity im pretty sure.
hush pey, in that scenario i was thinking mostly of you....and the fact of planets acually moving around a system i thoink could be eliminated.....cause i doubt anyone would care... also lecter, if you dont have anything better to post, then just DONT POST
I suggest acually trying the link before shooting holes in this.. '-_-

Raven101 : READ THIS FIRST!

I mean it's pretty frickin obvious that this has been suggested time and time again by newbies that are to damn lazy to read, and just pull suggestions out of there arse. But at least your pretty consistent.

Raven101: there are trolls here... try to ignore them.
But in all honesty, this general idea is suggested once a month (and each time it is shot down). You could have seen this pretty easily if you had used the "search" feature. Try searching for "planets". In fact, I did this already: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/search?q=planets
As you can see, this topic has been covered before. Also, do take a look at the thread I posted earlier (which says in all caps "PLEASE READ PRIOR TO POSTING A SUGGESTION") before posting.
As for hiding within a gas giant... much of this game's awesomeness comes from the use of a "realistic" physics model. The ability to hide within a gas giant seems to break that.

im guessing you havnt seen the latest startrek movie eh?
as per "realistic" physics? I've been ranting about the inaccuracies in that movie since I saw it. Otherwise, it was a fun one :)
hmm i would still like a dev to give some kind of input, and if you want to get a accurate idea of what im suggesting, download Oolite and try skiming a planet..
The devs try to limit the graphics load of any given sector. Some consideration might be needed for something the size of a planet. for one thing, the size of the triangle used to build it might be so large that at any point on the planet it would look perfectly flat, unless you where at a point where two or more triangles met, which might look like a crest or triangular mountain. the devs might be able to create a very large "roid" and offset it so you warp in next to one side, and add an "atmosphere" to the entire sector.
i don't think you really comprehend the size of even an earth sized planet. no one would ever fly around one in a vo style ship. it would take too long.
the system/sector maps show planets as stationary, because by design, the actual movement of planets and roids is accounted for and canceled by the coordinate system of the system/sector map. this is a common feature of advance stellar cartography. you do not sense the movement of roids, because they are in orbit, and you are in orbit, meaning that you move together, and sense of movement is based on the delta of your movement vs their movement.

The idea of being able to skim a gas giant (a-la an episode of battlestar galactica, amongst other things) it an oold idea, and something I've considered for over a decade (regardless of realism or whatever else). But none of this is trivial to implement, given our current setup (even just for gas giants, doing detailed planets would be a far bigger thing.. graphically). Plus, the development-to-improvement ratio on this kind of feature would be pretty poor. There are a lot of other things we should probably do first.
Proposal:
make planet huge, occuping exactly 1 sector.
No atmospheric/space transition possible... ships engines cannot overcome gravitational pull , so you have to jump away. And it cannot withstand entry heating, simply spaceships are not prepared for that and nav computer will prevent it, Instead, jump in.
Visuals are exactly as Dau L10. "Smoke". Maybe more colors.
(MAYBE) Put a HUGE ROID at one "corner" of sector. That is planet's core. Maybe possible to mine, with a special beam that works from 5000m.
Another advantage: due frequent eletric storms, radar is way less effective, and "Ppl jumped to Xn" only shows from 100m.
Miners and traders dream...
Possible? plz?
I also propose 1st such planets "discovered" to be named Allonia... ;-)
Plot: New improvement being rumored of new improvement on jump drives and nav computer would allow atmospheric jumps possible. Some time later the 1st miners start testing their atmospheric jumps possible and find that only giant gas planets allow a safe operation. Later traders learn that every system have at least one gas planet that could be used to evade pursuiters and are perfect for "discret" trades...
