Xico - Ship Renders

I needed to draw out some better ideas for the freighter ship. It will be the next ship I make.

I will be uploaded slightly less blurry renders in a second or two.

I think it needs much more fine detail, both for model and textures.

Update -> BMP renders so not so fuzzy.

Ship info:
Polygons: 1132 (about half amount Inc allows)
Textures: 2048/2048 (Above Inc recommended) (good thing)

Things to do:
1) Add more fine details
2) Fix fin proportions (less boxy)
3) Alpha maps and all those other fun things.
4) Spec map for glass/brightness/etc

Indeed, the chassis is a little bit square. Maybe trim the width a little?

Also, I agree with some of the previous posts. The hull damage is in my opinion a little bit too much still. Scuffs and scrapes are okay, but this model looks like it has a compromised hull already. Just a thought. Maybe no gaping holes, but some marks here and there.

As posted in the things to do: The boxyness will be addressed, whether with smoothing groups, reducing width or textures.

I rather like the current model of it, I just think that the damage marks seem too symmetrical and.... bright.... You might want to take those out and just have the paint scratched/faded or some-such.

The renders I have been posting are "Bright Light (over 1.0, it's actually 2.5) so 250% of normal. I did so to show off the model.

From now on I will post "standard" and "bright" renders.

They are actually fairly dark when in "normal" light.

Well I actually meant the bright purple wires, I don't know if I'm a very big fan of those.

I think ship should not have such obvious damage marks, who in their right mind would launch a ship in that state? (and call it 100% repaired)
At most some scratched paint as in on Prometheus.

If vo supports it damage could show up as ship is being damaged, if not i'd leave it out till it can.

it looks good. keep going on it..
but i think the wear marks are way too big, like has been said before, and it could use a little slimming down.
when you buy a new ship, you don't want it to look like a lemon! :P

i'd still fly it.

Maybe consider toning down the yellow-black "caution tape" stuff around the hull as well. It makes sense to have a couple spots of it in places where you legitimately don't want dock hands to stick their appendages, but this ship just has way too much. Specifically the sides of the gun mounts (I assume that's what those are) and the top of the hull should probably just be flat gray.

See the Atlas for a good example of tasteful use of caution markings.

EDIT: Or perhaps consider using the places that are currently yellow-striped as the areas of owner-selectable paint color.

Okay:

Maq -> If this goes through, I will be modeling 36 ships (12 per nation) I viewed this ship as one from UIT that are stuck in space.

But it sounds like people like their "clean" ships, so I will be removing the damage today and adding mode details elsewhere.

Ladron -> The yellow hazard markers ARE where the "other" colors will go. I have to put a base color down to "show it off" and yellow was what I picked. (This is just a requirement when making a ship in 3d, nothing can be "blank/empty)

Fail to see what it being uit has to do with anything.
Ship where structural elements are not covered with armor/hull by design (cause it's cheap or lighter or whatever) is one thing,
one where it's open to space cause noone bothered to fix it is i think another.
(if that's the feel you were going for?)

On that note i don't really see it being uit design but, i suppose i wouldn't hurt to have variety between ships of one nation either.

I would be thrilled to have a variety of ships between nations. And I agree with the other posters- the ships should look fairly clean.

Things to note:
1) All yellow strips will be user changeable to whatever color you want (in game)
2) The glass on the front is NOT done (have to add a reflection/spec map to it)
3) Keep in mind that eventually (if all goes good) we may have a full 12 or 26 ship lineups. So don't compare how this ship "will fit in" to current in game ships.

Things I would like:
1) What kind of detail should i add? I plan on adding more chips/rust to specific area.
2) What would you like to see?

Anyways, as for chipping/scratching, it may look cool if you added streaks of long scratching down the painted bit of the underbelly, kind of like someone forgot to put the landing gear down. That would look pretty cool. And maybe some more black scorches in the areas near the jet, kind of like the junk you would see around fighters' jets today.
