The hybrid that Incarnate describes might be workable should the devs decide to take the time to get it working... let them make that decision. But all we need to do to get more people is just get more people.
1. Talk this game up with everyone you know.
1. Talk this game up with everyone you don't know.
1. Play the game everywhere you can.
1. Play the game even where you can't/ are not supposed to.
The free 8-hour start will let anyone know whether they will like the game or not. I would like to say that during this 8 hours the tutorials should be mandatory. People in their 8-hour intro shouldn't even see the IRC comm panel. There was a guy online last night asking tons of questions that if he had taken even the first two tutorials he would have known. Like, "Where do I land?"
So ...
1. Force the tutorial. It takes only a few hours even if you're slow to catch onto things like I am.
2. Start the 8-hour clock after the tutorial is finished.
Really, though, if a player isn't hooked by the end of the tutorial nothing will hook him. Even if you give him a free month of play, if the tutorial didn't do it nothing else will.
To those who want to find a way to make the game "affordable"...
Get real... 10 bucks for a month of GREAT fun is peanuts, literally. I spend more on peanut butter in a month than I do for VO.
But please, please, please, don't clutter this game up with ads. There are other ways to generate revenue. I am very new, but I have told about 50 people about this game. I am meeting a friend tomorrow to show him. He is an addict to EV Nova and i know VO will bite him hard. This is how VO can grow.
Cheapen it, and people will go away. Ads will cheapen it.
The other thing that will happen if entry is made cheap or free is that tire thumpers will come along and pooh-pooh what they otherwise have no interest in. We don't need people to bad mouth VO. We need people to evangelize.
If you want to make VO free, make it free to evangelists. Anyone who brings in 10 people can stay for free as long as the ten people stay. But I think this would be unmanageable. The fact is, if you love VO enough that you get 10 people to play and stay, you don't likely give a hoot about 10 bucks a month for the amount of fun those ten bucks in VO gives you.
So..
To players, Talk it up!
To devs, Keep it up!
"If you build it, they will come."
