Although not limited to this particular instance: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/1/11963 and as a follow-up to this discussion: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/1/10430 I think there's something we could do to avoid many of these situation. Analogy included.
When a car cruises on the highway, it normally does 100km/h (depending on your locality but that seems like a norm in the Americas). A car can go faster. You floor it and boom it can double or tripple that limit.
But that same car, however good it may be, can only back-up the driveway at a limited speed. Even on an open stretch, cars can rarely do more than 40mk/h IN REVERSE. That's simply how they're geared.
If you're like me and hate [expletive deleted] ganking, running and backrolling, I think we could all agree at limiting the reverse thrust speed. Something slower than any ship's max cruising speed. Say, 45m/s.
It's quite sufficient for most maneuvers, would utterly screw up idiots in game and is fast enough to pull your moth out the garage.

i disagree. i'd say the same effect is better accomplished by allowing limited attatude controle during turbo.
that way we keep non turbo combat the same, but using turbo to close distance with a backroller doesn't mean locking yourself on a single terjectory.

It might add some depth to the game bye putting that limit on all ships except fighters. Bombers are could be meant for straight on attacks while fighters are designed to be all over the place. A cargo ship isn't used for fighter so it could have that limit. A cap ship has more thrusters pushing forward then back.
edit: Maybe make ships that gave up having an equal backward speed and acc to increase forward speed and acc.

I despise backrolling as much as you do, but reducing reverse speed would make the AGT way too powerful.

They start rolling. You move forward, dodging their energy with SMALL strafe's to the left/right/etc.
Your going faster because they are using a percentage of their thrust on moving side to side/up and down (rolling).
You gain on them.
You fire in their incredibly predictable path.
If your fighting a vulturious, then tough luck.
Just give up and walk away. . . .

Tap that twice every second while maneuvering.

The AGT and flare arguments change my opinion on this. A big no-no. Besides, like Kix said, backrollers are pretty predictable to shoot at without auto aim.
I like lordQs idea. It doesn't make much sense that we have no lateral thrust when we turbo. We should be able to change course while under turbo, the change would just be slower.
if this was to be implemented, rockets need to be made slower.
Backrolling isn't the only way to escape rockets.
Besides, a valk coming at you with rocket is going to hit you no matter what even if you're backrolling at 60m/s.

If you're backrolling, but not if you're just moving backwards and dodging in the right direction. What they're all saying is that your suggestion would not just kill backrolling, but kill any form of dodging implying moving backwards. Which is obviously not desirable.
I think limiting the backing up speed by around 20ms would be good, and we can nerf rockets if that's too much.
The analogy is terribly flawed, but I agree with the original post.
why not just get rid of auto-rolling and make it only manually usable. I've never found the reverse speed to be an issue at all.

Actually, while manuvering under turbo, your turing acceleration will no change. It will just appear slower because you are traveling a further distance for ever amount of distance you move because of your turing.

Nothing is wrong with backrolling. Being able to dodge and fly in all directions is what makes Physics mode useful.

While constantly changing your direction (which is what rolling is. A whole bunch of Up/Down + Left/Right OR Spinning + etc.) your ship never reaches the max base speed of lets say 65 or 70.
It will if you are backing up in a straight line though.

While constantly changing your direction (which is what rolling is. A whole bunch of Up/Down + Left/Right OR Spinning + etc.) your ship never reaches the max base speed of lets say 65 or 70.

I'm sort-of on the fence on this one (leaning more towards lowering reverse thrust, but not just because of backrolling)... but I thought I'd at least point out a couple of things.
People are talking like the suggestion was to remove backrolling entirely. Lowering reverse speed wouldn't make it impossible or even that much harder to dodge rockets / agt. Its not like you would be -unable- to reverse. Lowering reverse thrust would just make it a lot easier to actually engage your enemy.
I've got nothing against backrolling besides the fact that its annoying since 75% of the people I fight against do it. The fights just get extremely silly and drawn out (especially if they're in a backrolling rocket-valk). I don't like all my fights revolving around backrolling - thats the main reason why I would want to see it nerfed.
In the end, I don't think reverse top speed ever would get nerfed. I just don't think there'd be an easy way to do it. How would it work if you were floating forwards at top speed, then decided to turn around? It doesn't make too much sense that your ship would automatically slow down after simply turning around, game engine-wise.

Your ship doesn't automaticly turn around. Look at your speed bar when you change directions.
In my opinion backwards speed or acceleration should be kept the way it is. Thats what is so great about Vendetta, skill is a huge factor in the game.
