They had their place now, until Arolte whined about them.
*sigh*
Still whining, are we, Freeman? The avalons were just placed there as an experimental and fun weapon. The devs clearly stated that a lot of the weapons would be unbalanced at the initial release of 3.2.0. Some STILL are. They also said not to get too cozy with the certain properties of each weapon and ship, because those too would eventually change. And so far all these claims have in fact held up to be true.
Since you're having trouble understanding, let me point out something that you may have overlooked about the avalons. It's obviously a very big weapon, with a huge blast radius, and the label of a "torpedo." This can only suggest that they would be used against capital ships and frigates. What you may consider useless right now will be a godsend in the future, when the threat of capital ships and frigates WILL become a reality. The devs are simply getting ready for it.
Freeman, let me also ask you a few questions to clear up my point. Have torpedoes ever been traditionally used against fighters and bombers? Why would they even call them torpedoes to begin with? Why do rockets and swarm missiles have such a tiny blast radius, when the avalons have such a big one with a lot of damage? Doesn't that seem kind of odd to you? What you're asking for is a bazooka specially designed to kill a mosquito. If you still don't see anything wrong with that, well... maybe you're the one that needs to change your perspective
My suggestion to you, Freeman, is to read up on the official Vendetta products page and some of the things the devs have been sharing with us for quite some time. Because IMO you really don't have a clue about what you're talking about or where the gameplay of Vendetta is even headed. Look into other space combat sims (or even simply watch sci-fi movies) to refresh your memory, perhaps.

You don't get it, do you?
I don't care what happens to the game now...I'm just saying what I say to piss you off because I don't like you, Khral...err...Arolte.
I never did like you.

In that case your posts should be deleted or you should be banned from the forum. Have you even read the terms of usage for these forums? It seems like you're in violation of it now.
come on, come on, let's keep it friendly
Arolte doesn't like freemann and vice versa, that's all fine. Just ignore the other person. If he posts something, just ignore it , and it will be fine ;).
cheers
// have fun you guys while playing the game, that's the point of it, and testing the engine naturally ;) :D

Renegade is right.
Arolte, you hate me and I hate you...can we at least agree on that?

Guys, beside the point. I see Arolte's point about torpedoes. In WW2, it was a chore for a sub captain to hit a destroyer, they simply could turn away from the torpedoes. However, I would like to see avalon's eventually equipped with homing devices. What would prevent a nation from doing so?
Those are a pair of capital ships duking it out. It's not quite the same as anything now. Mabye it'll be possible for a frigate to turn out of some torpedos later on.
Perhaps a decent homing device could make up for the shrunken detonation range. It doesn't need to be anywhere near as good as any other warhead though.

Putting homing devices on torpedoes would only result in their usage against fighters and bombers all over again. Why would one be necessary if capital ships and frigates travel at slow speeds? They're huge anyway, making them easy targets to begin with. Torpedoes have always required the person to lead their target. They're not supposed to function like missiles. It's one of those weapons where you lead your target, fire off, and forget ... or adjust accordingly to any misses. I mean I can see your argument as to why you'd want it that way, but I just don't see a way to justify why they would be needed.
Anyway, I'm confident that the devs know what they're doing. I'm sure they have a working concept planned out deep inside the Guild offices. I'll hold further comments and suggestions until we actually see how these capital ships work and what their characteristics are within the game. Only then can we fairly suggest changes (if anything needs to be changed that is) to help take down these monsters.

Monsters? Nah...only 750m...an ISD or a SSD is a monster. :P
I agree...let the devs do their thing.
As for what I meant by a homing device, allow me to elaborate for the record. It would be a device designed primarily to correct for those "d**n it - missed it by that much" errors...not a real homer in the sense we've seen. I'd say that it would only work if it were already <35-40m from the target...and mabye not even all the time at that range. Not everyone has controls precise enough to put the warhead <10 m from a target at a far range...

ISD: 1600 m
SSD: 12800 m (!)
Imagine those in vendetta. (eeks!)

Ummm... Care to explain the acronyms? And a 12.8 km long ship would just be scary...
Star destroyers are classed as follows:
Victory Class Star Destroyer (VSD). Usually painted white, with red highlights. These ships were the warfleet at the end of Episode II.
Imperial Class Star Destroyer (ISD). The classic Star Destroyer we know and love. Usually painted white. Much longer than the old Victory class. Built exclusively for the Empire.
Super Class Star Destroyer (SSD). Fleet flagships. Fscking Huge.

Torpedoes have graduated with technology. There is not a single unguided torpedo on the face of the earth right now. Every single one of them has a guided warhead. If we're going to get huge capital ships, unguided torpedoes might not be a problem. But think about it, what's to stop a nation with the least bit of scientific knowledge from taking the homing device off a smaller warhead and rigging a avalon up to it? The answer: nothing. And if that helped that nation take down more ships, why, every nation would be doing it. So, while they should be slow(er) (huge warheads), they should still have homing devices

SirCamps, yes, it would make that nation more powerful and it would give them an advanatage. But ask yourself, would it make the game more fun or balanced? That's what I'm concerned about here.
SirCamps: In point of fact, what is to stop every nation with sufficient scientific knowledge to cruise around the stars in the fashion that they do in Vendetta, from equiping all thier warheads with Brilliant AI's, engines capable of the speeds of the fastest fighters and capable of jumping through wormholes after their targets, and nuclear (or anti-matter) warheads with 30km kill radi? What's to stop them from leaving these weapons around as mines to activate whenever they detect a signiture of a hostile nations ship approach within 30,000km? Ect.
Arolte: I would say that it would be more fun AND balanced. The heat would be on the frigate's team to take down the fighters before they get within launching range.
Celebrim: Finances. The cost would be astronomically high (haha) to equip missiles with the engines of the fastest fighters (this is a high-grade warhead) and deep-space radar (30,000km). And that's one nuke. A possibility would be a control station that fighters have to take out to disable your "uber missiles of doom" before the frigate warps in. Advance Recon is a good thing.

A guided torpedo is only as good as it's speed and power. If your talking about a capitol ship...you do not need a massive blast. that is just to unfociused and the armor on the ship will probably absorbe it. From all the research I have done...there are two general types of torpedo's this fine day. The standard anti sub torp. They are persistent, they lock on and damn it you can't escape a hit unless your really tricky and have awsome counter measures.
Second is the Squal, it's a russian made supercavitating torp. It's a rocket engine with a war head. It travles at 300 kph and is unguided. the idea is it hits before you can ever get the hell out of the way.
Now the avalon is an interesting weapon. Probably to aim it accuratly you need to get in close then run like hell hoping the target doesn;t move up or down by 10 meters. Kind of ineffective unless your nice and close. I think at this point you would be better off screaming past a cap and droping a magnetic mine as you pass by...or allow the player to det the darn thing them selves. Also...will the caps have point defenses...what if they can knock it out of the big black before it ever hits.

Why not make weapons customizable like ships? This should make everyone happy... Buy homing chips for your missiles, some better than others, buy the propulsion system for your missiles - and set it up... Heck, maybe you want to strap a rocket and a homing chip on a mine - fine by me. So what do you say?
Should special dealers offer custom (premaid - or made to order) missiles? Maybe you buy the parts your self then assemble them (like customizing a ship). Or would it be best if we all dealt with stock weapons.
Dreaming on, what if a station with certain ores could sell you different weapon cores. In a dynamic world, the station with the right combination of ores available could offer the best cores (until they ran out of raw materials or stock).

Hehe. Seen A1k0n's Lightning Balls? He did just that: Strapped rockets and homers onto an unlimited, turreted lightning-mine dispenser.
