Look at the gmail interface. Very clean, and even with tabs and overlaps.
One thing that I'd like to say about the faction sliders...
When I played EnB, what you did effected different factions. An example is if you killed someone in one faction, enemies of that faction would like you a little more and friends of that faction would go down. But one way around this was to trade, so it was possible to be liked by two opposing factions.

Yah, Lemming and roguelazer, you are right. It would be nice to have a slightly different method of navigation. Perhaps like gmail. Yes.
But I was going off of this:

So, indeed, I think the basic UI interface could be improved. Having tabs that shrink/expand (kinda like tabbed browsing in Firefox or Safari)

Keeping things flexible would be cool. Perhaps something like this would be better. (?)
/me resists temptation to mock up a working interface in Flash, if only to spare my humiliation at the hands of roguelazer...

Woah. It's almost BeOS-like. Anyhow, I don't like that style for one important reason- rounded tabs waste space. Those waste lots of space. It's better than the older mockup, but not perfect yet. If inspiration strikes me, I'll make something in Inkscape, but I'm not artistic, so it's not likely.
PS: I can view flash junk if I want to. You can't escape my criticisms that easily. :P

OK roguelazer. I've come up with an AWESOME new interface that you should LOVE:

Mmm. VO as a MUD. I like it! :P
Hehe. In all seriousness, I'll probably do something this weekend on it.
Looks remarkably like the MOO III interface, infact Im almost sure that Infogames Interactive would sue if they saw it in VO.
What's MOO III ?
Does that have something to do with Neutral Space Cow?

haha...no, Master of Orion III. I think you knew that. ;)
Seriously, yeah I forgot about Master of Orion. Heard about it, never played it. (I'm remarkably un-versed in computer gaming, before VO my most-played game was probably Alpha Centauri, so I'm a little out of it as far as other MMORPG interfaces go.)
Could someone post a screenie of MOO III so I can see what Scorpious is talking about?

It's not much of a connection. I've seen -lots- of games with that kind of a UI.

LOL Oh crap they use Eurostile condensed as well! Nooooooes!
(kernel.panic Quick! Find another font!)
I agree with roguelazer, the use of a tabbed interface is not a "actionable" infringement, it's too common. You might as well say that Apple will sue Guild for using a menu-driven interface.
However, yeah another font would be advisable.

Check out some screenshots beyond the first page, it's more than just the font. For example, look at the sliders; they are exactly the same. Nevertheless this bores me, so go ahead and play around with your stolen ideas. :P
I agree the station interface is in need of a serious overhaul. I like the layout you have proposed here. It is clean and seems very straight forward, color scheme would not to be adjusted to stay in theme with the rest of the game. I would definetely be interested in hearing from the DEV's the direct they are going toward with an improved interface. If in fact they are working on one.
Karthoris: yes, in fact we are working on one. See

And a quote from the June 29, 2005 News:

Much of the development time was spent creating the new UI system, which while currently very unattractive, has loads of configuration potential, including the ability use user-configured skins, etc. It's our intention to open up much of the UI functionality to the userbase and let people create their own HUDs, menu interfaces, or whatever.

honestly i think the bigest issue with the new UI will be controling a cap. ship in 3 dimensions.
think about this. The fixed camera set up we have now is not at all usable for a cap ship. there needs to be some sort of 3 dimensional; tacticle display. I personaly have given it some thought, and keep comming back to something similar to the displays used in The Wrath of Khan.
I assume the devs have some plan of their own for how cap ships would be controled. but in my minde that is far more inportant than what sort of menues are used in stations.
