[UPDATE!]
I've had a few ideas floating around in my head recently, and they have to do with the tutorial system.
When I frist started playing Vendetta the tutorial didnt help me much, it still left me wondering what the hell was going on and what am I suppose to do. So ive thought up a way for some elements of the storyline to be imposed and for the tutorial to better explain what Vendetta "is". Beware this post could get extremely long so I warn you now.
From our current understanding the Serco and the Itani are constant enemies and the UIT are merely the business sectors.
When anyone learns to become a pilot in the real world they have to go through a test and if your going to be a military pilot you go to an academy correct?
Since the Serco seem to be the more military driven people in Vendetta, I think starting them off in a Miltary Academy would be better then starting them of fin some random station. This academy would provide a learning area, a place where the new player is safe, but cannot leave the sector until he reachs a certain level EX 1/1/1/1/1.
The academy would have a general or commander which would personally greet you as you enter Vendetta as a up and coming Serco pilot. This would require a real voice yo be put in game with some sort dialogue telling you what you need to do next in order to earn your *Pilots license*.
The General would give instructions on the mission, four missions in total. And at certain points there would be menus which pop up and tell you what things are and where you should go next, and how to do what the General has just asked of you.
Mission one
The frist mission would be to destroy 20 hive collectors, after doing so they would recieve one level up which would put them at 1/0/0/0/0. The dialouge would run something like this.
before mission
General: Welcome to the Academy, We have high expectations and I'm not gonna give you your license until you prove yourself. Do you know what the Hive is? I guess you wouldn't your just like all the others aren't you? The Hive is all the UIT's fualt and those Damn Itani's dont seem to give a damn. Its up to us to get rid of them for the sake of our people. I want you to go get rid of a few of um, prove you got what it takes.
During mission(NEW)
Computer: The Computer will give the player a tutorial on what is a must know for this mission, instead of introducing all the elements of Vendetta at once. It woule explain what different modules are and hows to fire etc. Heres an example.
Computer (Robotic voice): Welcome the Academy, Im available for any questions you may have to ask, But before we proceed with the task at hand, we will go over the basics of spcae flight.
In order to move anywhere we need to start our engine, the W key will accelerate your ship to a certain point, please try it now.
Very good, at times this may be a little slow and you might need some more speed, hit the TAB key and youll be accelerated at a faster pace than your normal engines can handle.
Excellent, Now we are traveling at a much faster speed, youll notice that your battery bar, on the right side of the screen is slowly decreasing, youll need to stop using your turbo ability in order for it to recover the lost energy.
Great, but movement will not destroy your target, press the left mouse button and your weapons will fire. Only weapons which have been set to certain weapon groups will fire, weapons groups may be set at any station. Go ahead and try it out.
Not bad, Now in order to avoid hitting anything while we jump to our destination, we need to move three thousand meters away from the nearest object, once you do this we can move ahead with your mission.
Good now, hit the N key and you sector map will pop up, click on the area (Letter-#)
in order to set our path, the universe map is also viewable from here.
Now exit the Map and hit the activate key or enter, this will start our jump, we should arrive at (Letter-#) shortly.
Well, we made it, now its your job to get rid of those bots, use the knowledge from this tutorial to help you in your fighting, if your damaged, return to the station and youll be repaired, the station is located at (Letter-#). The General will contact you apon your successful return.
If you have any questions you can contact me thorugh your mission computer. Good luck pilot.
After completion
General: Congratulations boy, youve prove to be nothing. Don't think blastin a few bots outta the sky is gonna get you anywhere soon, I've got plenty more tasks for you to do before I can let you roam the galaxy. For now, get used to your targeting system and the interface, and come back to me when you've had a little more practice flying that hunk of junk.
The Second mission would be to deliver a package to one of the Generals friends. This package would be something of importance to give the player a feeling of (oh I better get this right)
The Dialouge would run as follows
before mission
General: I see you've gotten pretty good at botting, you seem to be making a good name for yourself. Your not like the other pilots here, always slacking off and never completing their missions. I tell you what, My friend (name), well her brithdays coming up and shes been down in the dumps, you get this package to her right away ya hear? Ill have something special for you when you return.
During mission(NEW)
Once again the computer would explain to the player what must be done and what will happen when certain things are accomplished.
Computer: The General has instructed me to help you in anyway possible on your little trip. Your inventory tab will allow you to see what you have at this station, please click on it so we can move ahead.
Good, now highlight the (Generals Gift) and Load it into your cargo hold.
Now that thats been done we can leave the station, Once you depart we will continue the task at hand , see you in space.
Well you sure took your time, Anyway, like I told you before bring up your sector map and highlight (Letter-#) then we can go.
Good, no make sure we are away from all objects, good alright then punch it!
Aww crap, Looks like were stuck in a Ion storm, ok then proceed to the Ion storm exit point, it will appear as a blue dot on your radar. Watch out for hive bots, they swarm players all the time, using thre turbo might be a good idea, and hit the E button while doing so, this will make you roll and will throw the bots targeting systems off.
We got out of there just in time, go ahead and dock with the station and upload the cargo from the inventory screen, ill have the guards deliever the package, then go on home, you'll have to go threw the Ion field again but you can handle it right?
Good luck, and Good work.
after mission
General: Thanks alot, now I told you I'd have something special for you right? This my friend is a Wraith, alot better than that piece of junk youve been flying around in, and heres something else, its a Xang Xi battery (medium battery) it should help you out against those pesky bots. Go out and get used to the feel of your new ship, come back and ill give you one of your final missions.
Mission 3
Mission three is where we introduce the mining system to the player, with their new wraith they can now mine and be somewhat efficent at it. This mission is for the player to recover 100 ferric ores and bring them back to the academy.
The dialouge runs as follows
before mission
General: Well that new ship cost me a pretty penny, So im gonna ask you a favor now, I need you to go get some Ferric ores about 100 of them, that should cover the cost of your new ship. Use this mining beam and this mineral scanner to make sure your getting the right stuff. I really need this fast so, if you get it all in an hour ill skip you ahead to your final mission.
During mission(NEW)
Time to payback the General right? well go to your ship tab and we will outfit you ship with the neccesary equipment.
You've been givin a mineral scanner and a basic mining beam, equip them both to your new wraith, and meet me outside the station, ill have more instructions for you there.
Target one of the asteriods by pressing the B key, this also targets anything in front of you. To your right is the temperature of the target and the what is inside it as well.
Activate you mining beam the same as you would a normal weapon, but be within 100 meter of the target, so your mining beam can reach it.
Now your cargo hold is full, you'll need to do this several times in order to reach 100 ferric ores, drop the ferric ors of at the station and come back here again, repeat this again and again until you have the 100 ores, you may jettison un needed ores by press the J key, you can get ride of any un needed ores there.
Good luck pilot.
After mission
General: Thanks, Yeah that should do it, ok I was gonna skip you ahead to your next mission anyway just dont tell anyone ok? Go kill a few more bots, ill have your final ready by tomorrow, until then good luck pilot and god speed.
Final Mission
The final mission is where the General leads the pilot out to a sector and test the pilot by having him fight a apu-tech 5 guradian (dummed down so the player can beat it) and after completion the player will be givin his pilots license.
Before mission
General: Alright, looks like your diong just fine in that new wraith of yours, but I doubt youll be able to pass the final test, hardly anyone does. Meet me outside the station, ill be the white dot on your radar, follow me to sector (letter-#) and ill show you what your test is.
At sector(NEW)
General: Thats an Apu-tech 5 Guard, nothing like those bots you've been fighting, this one gonna really challenge you. use your strafing, your gonna need it,
Before fighting the guard
Computer: These can be alot tougher than the normal bots youve been fighting, use your starfing to dodge its shots and dont forget to use your turbo if he gets to close, the strafing keys are listed in your mission computer chat box, look them up before engaging the guard
Good now that you've practiced for a moment, its time for your final test! Make this one and youll get your pilots license and youll have wormhole clearence.
After mission:(UPDATED]
General: Youre better than I expected, Maybe someday youll have my job (luaghing). I guess you proved yourself, heres your License. Good luck pilot and if you have any questions ill always be here. By the way, you may need this, its a wormhole clearance pass, you should be able to get out of the system now, go on and make me proud, the Serco are counting on you. But beware, those damn UIT will rip you off until you've got nothing left except the shirt on your back, and the Itani will rip you lib from lib if your not careful.
Good luck pilot, and make the Serco proud!
ITANI TUTORIAL(NEW)
The Itani are a our more technologically advanced nation and more peaceful, or so it is said. Since the Itani are currently the most peaceful of the three, I feel starting them off in a Research University, or "Divina university" would best suit the storylines needs.
A Professor of some great importance would tell the player about the history of Itan and tell them just what Vendetta is about, Instead of pilot, the player would be address as student or apprentice.
As with the Serco Tutorial, the Itani would have four missions which would give them a window into the three fields of Vendetta (Combat, Mining, and Trading). We would start this off in the order of importance to the Itani people, seeing as they are at war with the Serco, their frist mission will be similar to the Serco's frist, but put together from a different point of view.
The Second mission will introduce the player to the trading field of Vendetta and will give them the necessary knowledge of transportation, and how to travel accross the galaxy. It would also introduce them into the Inventory system and show them all the areas needed for trading,
The Third mission will introduce the player to mining area of Vendetta, By showing them the News system and teaching them the importance of Mineral scanners and the heat of the asteriods. Also the Player would be challenged in a similar manner to the way the Serco player will be challenged in the ION field.
The Final test is where we would allow the player to challenge a dummed down guardian (similar to the Apu-tech 5 guard), this would give them womrhole clearance and if successful a pilots license.
[UPDATE!]
Mission one(NEW)
As with the Serco tutorial, the Itani will have to destroy or eliminate 20 hive collector bots, apon completion of this mission they will be boosted up to level one license in the three combat fields. Combat license, Light Weapons and Heavy Weapons.
Before Mission
Professor(name): Your assignment for today is to get rid of a few Hive bots in Divina (Letter-#). Afterall it is our responsibility. The people of Itan look to us for our innovations, and our protection it seems that we are the only ones actually dealing with the Hive now a days. The Serco and their foolish pilots actually think they are winning, pathetic isnt it? Anyway, my rantings are done, you should be moving on with your studies, Leave the station and your Tutorial computer will assist you.

Cool, but it deos not cover what is actually in the current introduction. We also already have a mining introductory mission.
edit: I think you fixed it, cool. good job, and keep up the good work.

YES!
These are exactly the type of intro missions we need.
I also like that part about not being able to leave the newbie area until you've finished the newbie missions. I would suggest allowing them to explore the entire system, however. One sector might be a little small.
Perhaps the RP justification would be that you need to be granted a "wormhole navigation protocol" before leaving the system or something like that.
Imagine how much fun it would be finally being able to leave the system for the first time.

I guess great minds think alike.
or did some one find my notebook? :)
Three different versions, one for each nation would be great. It would indoctrinate the players into the world of VO and incorporate the back story.
UIT:
So you want to join the trade guild? Well it isn't all money. Life is hard in this universe and you need some piloting skills to stay alive. Hmm. you have nothing but the shirt on your back? Well that's not a problem. Any cunning trader can make credits appear out of thin air. Here's a loaner ship you can use while you get yourself established.
The hive bots are extremely pesky and will attack your ship if you get too close. You better learn how to fly that bucket of bolts as soon a possible.
The Trader Guild has a job for you if you're interested. Take this crate of (ITEM) to this station.
AND SO ON...

You mean introduce, not indoctinate right? However, it is still a good idea.

Indoctrinate:
A)To instruct in a body of doctrine or principles.
I meant this word becuase I think the tutorials should teach the new players the principles of the Vendetta game.
Each tutorial would teach the players about the philosophy of their nation through the voice of the instruction. The Serco is more millitary, the UIT is more trader orientated, and the Itani is more contemplating your belly button.
The tutorial would teach you what it means to be Serco, Itani, or UIT and encourage the Role-Playing.

While I agree heartily with you, I'd like to point out that we were referring to this:
in·doc·tri·nate
To imbue with a partisan or ideological point of view. Example: a generation of children who had been indoctrinated against the values of their parents.
...kinda like you're indoctrinating players into thinking VO is the way, the truth, and the life. :P

Well in this game you are supposed to be partisan. The Serco and Itani are at WAR! Depending on how you read the back story you choose to join one of the three nations. Choose a political postion and play that point of view.
I'm for anything that adds a significant, definitive difference between the three nations, even if the difference is nothing more than the way the players are introduced to the basics at first.
Sounds like the Serco and the UIT have a good foundation for thier intoductions. How about the Itani? How would you structure that tutorial?
Well, hmm. I think a kind of soviet-communist "for mother Itan (russia!)!" approach would be good. This could branch off later on into "for Itan!" versus "for Akan!" approaches, and would increase the depth of Itani roleplay amongst each other.
And no, I'm not condoning Communism. I'm just saying that the Itani are idealists, or at least idealistic. I see Akan as being more realist, and "FOR THE HORDE!" kind of guys, which appeals to me personally. :P

edit: my ideas for actual content:
Recruiter: well son, you've signed up for a starship license? Good luck, you'll need it. If you see a serco, let the authorities take care of it, unless you go through the proper channels. Since you haven't actually enlisted yet, you are nonetheless required to go through our civilian training regimen for us to recognise your legitimacy. However, if you want to sign up, you can find more information by speaking to a marshal at a local station...
Recruiter: In the meantime, we'll make sure you know the basics of flying. You DO know how to fly an atmospheric shuttle, right? Okay, good. I'll walk you through how flying differs once you leave the station...
*leaves station*
Recruiter: Flying a shuttle is a far cry from what you're getting into up here. I just hope you're up to it. Remember, this is space. We aren't limited by atmosphere, and you can fly in any direction you want...even fly backwards. Currently, your ship is configured to keep you flying more or less straight. This is called Flight-assist mode. Press the ' key to turn this off.
Recruiter: Once you've flown around for a bit, try Flight-assist off. Note that you can not only control your direction forwards and backwards, but you can also strafe left, right, up and down.
Recruiter: To actually fly to a different sector, you'll have to bring up the map, and select the system you want to go to. Pick [station sector here], and fly 3000m from any large objects, and warp. I'll see you there.
*jumps*
Recruiter: To dock again with a station, you'll have to fly towards the S on your radar. They're special homing beacons, but because this is a time of war, we have disabled all autopilot features because of the risk of attack. It is generally reccomended that you have flight assist on when docking also.
*docks*
Recruiter: Well, you seem to know how to fly at least that bucket of bolts..I certainly hope you do. I'm sending you to learn how to take on Hive bots now, trust me you'll need it.
What?
You don't know what the Hive is?
The hive is a rogue program gone wrong in a UIT mining Queen, which has since then spawned large numbers of bots for a myriad purposes. Most have guns, some are absolutely lethal. But, I'll just be giving you a test dummy for practice. Jump to [empty sector], and we'll begin.

ETC.

I dislike associating real-world nations with in-game fictional nations. It brings in too many connotations that do not belong here. Yes, the Itani are idealistic, and so were many of the Soviet communists - but the Founding Fathers of the USA were also idealistic, and the Serco are as well. Drawing connections between Itan & Russia (or any other real-world nation) would be a mistake.
But parallels can be drawn, nonetheless.
What do you suggest?
What do you suggest?
Just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should. People can draw parallels between The One Ring of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings & the atomic bomb, but they shouldn't. Toldien repeatedly & strongly denied that his works were an allegory of any kind.
I would suggest that the world of Vendetta Online be self-contained. Itani should be Itani, Serco should be Serco, and UIT should be UIT. There is no reason to make connections with Soviet Communism or Oriental Feudalism or what have you, and doing so would make the world of Vendetta Online feel fake. A large part of the power of Tolkien's Middle Earth is that it is a world unto itself, it is not a parallel of Europe during World War II (despite the fact that people can & do draw those parallels).

...so what the heck do you think itani should be like? You're ranting about this, but you're not actually helping suggest what the nations should be like.
I thought the backstory already did that....
The backstory does do a good job of describing the relationship of the serco with the Itani, and so forth, but it doesn't really explain what everyday speech with Itani would reflect, or their mannerisms, or their loyalties to the state, or how prevalent Akanese influences are, etc.
