Okay, so maybe there could be four different radar screens that the player can choose/toggle between.
The current double 2D screens (for those of us who have gotten used to them, and don't really mind them)
That odd Freespace 2 radar with objects in the front hemisphere being in the center ring, and objects in the rear hemisphere being in the outer ring.
A small tactical 3D globe with dot representations of ships. Ships closer than 1000m appear as bright dots, and relative distance to target is represented as the distance from the center of the globe, ships farther than 1000m appear as dimmer, translucent dots on the periphery of the globe.
A larger "controller" 3D globe that represents ships as arrows showing vectors. This would take up a large section of screen, but would be really useful for players acting as "combat controllers" who direct group or guildmembers on where or who they attack. Maybe this globe is only available with an "Advanced Sensor Suite" that takes up a large weapon port.
I dunno... There are advantages and disadvantages to all radar systems.
The 2 screen system presents a very clear picture of what's directly in front and to the rear, but slightly warps the sides, top, and bottom (movements around this area are exaggerated)
The 1 screen system presents a clear picture of the front, sides, top, and bottom, but warps what's behind you.
The small globe presents a clear representation of everything around you, but since we're really viewing a 3D globe represented on a 2D screen, it loses a lot of its advantages, in that objects closer to the viewer can block objects farther from the viewer. If it were a real 3D holographic globe, you could simply move your head to look around the closer object, but on a monitor, you don't have this ability
The large globe has the same advantages and disadvantages as the smaller globe, but the extra information can cause information overload. But if we make this a special piece of equipment for a non-combatant, this might be pretty useful.
"So-and-so is headed for the Potaris! Stop him!" "A group of IDF are approaching you! Attack!" "The transport is running for the wormhole, but the guard bots aren't. Protect it!" That kind of thing.

Lots of good thoughts CP. I agree with many of your points. I especially like the idea that some of these additions could be added in special scanner suite.
I agree with the large globe there is the potential for "too much information" that's why I feel it should be available for more stratetgic situations.
But, whatever I think it would be great to be able to locate yourself in the sector

How about this.
Lets just get some more sectors in between nations because B8 is starting to get boring. We need another war zone.
I mean. Why would the Solra or Protarius want to travel that far just to be annihalated.
