The mentor bonus is a HOAX!

Dec 09, 2004 Spider link
For a long time you have cheated us out of the 5% announced rebate for our tradegoods, and we have spent countless hours working on helping beginners, answering their incessant questions over and over again in order to increase our mentor levels enough to get that little bit of edge in dropping prices down.

And what do we find out? Its a Hoax. Comparing with an equally high levelled serco with 0 mentor reviews, we find that the prices on goods, weapons and ships are the same.

okay, I'd probably do it anyhow, but I want that reward. could we get it retroactively too? ;)

Ahh, yes, there was some confusion about how this works. If you've mentored five times, you'll get better prices when you sell an item to your nation's station, not when you buy something. I'll update the loading screen tip to reflect this, and make the bonus a bit more significant for the next release.

But in the meantime, you get some cool new equipment to play with. Hopefully that'll make up for it!

well, I can't seem to find said cool equipment. Could you hint me to what its supposed to be?

There's a new repair cannon with your second mentor badge, and a new battery with your 3rd.

hmmm, I am personally against the mentor system. I pass out more information to new players than most mentors. I dont bother with the mentor system because imo it is more trouble than its worth. If mentoring were initiated by the mentor, not the mentee(is that a word?) it would be easier.

As it is when a new player asks for help, I have what i see as 2 choices.

1. I can just give him/her help, assit them as i can, and try to get them interested in the game by answering their questions.
or
2 I can try to sidetrack them into the mentor system, refusing to help them until they take time away from their initial question to let me explain how a console command works, just so i can get some reward points for it. By the time I have gotten them to understand what a mentor is, and how to do it, they are probably so fed up since all they wanted to know was, "how do i find a collector bot?" that they just logoff and go.

Obviously case #2 is a bit of an exageration, and i try to respond when someone is actively asking for a mentor, but so far the few times i have tried to mentor someone they either never got the /mentor command to work, or they never leveled and logged off the game entirely.

Making mentor a command for a new player to use is just a little silly.

Yea... I'm a little annoyed by the mentor system. NO newbie takes the time to /mentor invite CrippledPidgeon.

<newbie>: Can someone mentor me?
<CrippledPidgeon>: Sure. Just /mentor invite CrippledPidgeon
<other player>: Sure. Just /mentor invite "other player"
<other player2>: Sure. Just /mentor invite "other player2"
<newbie>: uh... Where do I find bots?
<other player3>: Just go into the nav menu and roll over the sectors with your cursor.
<newbie>: thanks!

I managed to convince two people invite me as a mentor when the game was released, but since that point, I've given up asking. Most newbies would rather just know the answer right away, rather than go through the process of getting a formal mentor.

Agreed.
A /mentor offer newbie would be nice.

Also, it would be good to have /mentor note to push informations back and forth when your mentor isn't really there.

Third point is that mentoring isn't mentioned in the Manual. I'm not sure if its in the Tutorial mission either.

hmm... my post at

http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/8030#93728

...really should be in this thread... but anyhow, here's how I recruit my mentee's :

-fly around capital stations looking for 0/0/0/0/0s, and asking them if there's anything they need help with...

or

-listen for anyone asking for help at any other time..
