Sticky Keys

Jul 25, 2004 ctishman link
Is there any way that the sticky key problem could be tracked down? The one where (on the Mac exclusively from what I've seen), the maneuvering keys stick active until you press them again. This one's been here forever, and I'm not sure where it comes from, but I'd really appreciate it if it went back there.

Oh yah, this one is really annoying once you evoke the bug.

Doesn't this happen if you accidently hit Caps Lock? Thats what I assumed was happening...

There is another "sticky keys" thats fairly neat.

hit tab and hold.
press shift and hold.
release tab.
release shift.

turbo boost still engaged.

I can do that TURBO/SHIFT trick on my PC. I think of it as cruise control.

Yeah, that can cause it, but it also happens just out of the blue anyhow, and has been happening since 3.0.something.

I hit the turbo key, and ctrl-esc out of the program to check IRC or email, and go back and lo and behold, I'm still boosting! Cool feature :]

The shift key does the same thing as the caplock key plebs ;)

I think of it as a true 'feature', not a bug!

the thing with turbo effectively does a /+turbo in console.

ctishman knows that...what the problem appears to be is that her keys become sticky without warning and at random times. Something that can get you killed if botting or fighting.

I have a Mac also but have never experienced this problem. My first guess would be multiple items bound to the same key. Type "/print all" (without quotes), in-game, to show what all your binds are.

Err... its a bug because if you are strafing, hit CapsLock, you now cannot strafe in any other direction, but you keep strafing the original direction, and even after turning CapsLock off, you continue to strafe... Basically if you accidently hit CapsLock in the middle of a dogfight (which is rather easy to do), your are really screwed...

I've been waiting for you to suddenly start drifting slowly in a straight non-dodging-I-just-hit-caps-lock line during one of your attacks for like a year or more Icarus, it must not happen to you THAT often. Boy will you get it when it does.

Anyway isn't this all because these commands are 2 part? As in you press d for right strafe and you will strafe to the right until the client recieves notice that d was released and sends the stop-strafing command. If you press shift or caps lock while the key is down then instead of releasing d you release D and the stop strafe command is never sent.

It's not really a bug is it? It's jsut the way keyboards work. I set all my important nav keys to both small and Cap letters to minimize the accidently hitting caps lock thing.

I noticed once that if you bind +turbo to "s" and to "S", and do that combo, the ship continues boosting. This may have just been on my computer... but it was a long time ago and my key assignments have since changed the "x" "X" commonality.

See the caps-lock thing as a feature or a bug, there should be a BIG warning about it somewhere (in the boxed docu...?). Not sure if I didn't simply overlook it, though :-#

What follows is a longish description of a n00b's experience, to amuse you (or not) ;-)
If you are in hurry, skip on...

It's very irritating when, as a n00b, you try to get to a (unmonitored) station, suddenly have to avoid a roid at 10m distance by autobreaking, turning and boosting (that's quite a combo, here!); then - uups ... you accidentially hit the caps-lock while autobraking, but you don't know that yet! - something doesn't feel right.
You can't de-/accellerate nor strafe, the speedbar turns all yellow/red, so the engine ain't dead ;-) but you don't move. Hmmm, why not try physics mode... yeah, you can move in every direction - at a speed of about 27 (in a centurion mkII...), when you release the key, you stop -- feels a bit like arcade.
So you try boost (switched back to arcade because maybe it's magically working again...). You get some speed (8), then - PANIC - a red dot appears in your radar, quite visible now, as you have overlooked it quite a while, beeing busy at the controls! The station is visible at about 120m but, alas, the entry is just around the corner, so boost! boost! boost!
Almost in, another check - got lucky at last: the red dot vanished. Not all red dots are evil :D So, what to try next? Not sure, you just start hacking on your keys in random order and number. Suddenly you make a leap left. Yeah! result, everything works fine again. So _what_ was that?...
If you're lucky (and can see your capslock-indicator from normal position), you'll remember that a small LED flashed for a split second...

I think I should get a joystick for gaming ;D

ctishman, one common cause of it is if you hit ctrl, I have ctrl bound to activate so it happens to me sometimes, what I did was made the opposite key direction unstick the first direction. This isn't a problem that is easy to fix according to a1.

i have found that when i get stuck strafing because of caps lock i can make it go away by strafing the opposite direction until my throttle meter has no red then pressing caps lock again. it it like a ying yang thing.... and since i strafe a lot when fighting i consider it a feature. :)

The problem is that Caps+key doesn't work the same as shift+key. When you use shift+key, it lets up when you release. With Caps+key, it just keeps going. I've wingbugged or crashed into stations many times because I was cruising along and pressed caps lock by accident, then couldn't figure out what was wrong and press the right combo of keys to fix it in time.
