Distance Indicator-

Jul 19, 2004 Durgia link
Not really sure if this is intentional or not, but the Distance Indicator reads 0m long, long before it is really 0m.
May just be me but 0m I should be right up against the thing where as its closer to 50m away, when it reads 0.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It seems fishy since even if you're right up against another ship it never actually reaches 0m in the target indicator. But for an asteroid it reaches 0m long before you're up against it. I'm assuming this was done because the distance indicator continuously selects the nearest object and calculates the distance from the center of that object. However, when we're talking about asteroids, which vary greatly in size, it would be necessary to apply an artificial distance to compensate for the largest of asteroids... so they picked one that was safe for all sizes. Maybe if there was a way to continuously recalculate the true distance of the closest object's edge, rather than the dead center, it would be more accurate.

The objects such as station sections, wormholes, asteroids and ice roids are represented by a dot...that is the location of the object. The rest is graphics. A sphere surrounds the object to include all parts. The distance is measured from the edge of this sphere.

[/me edited the above to appear smarter]

How about just showing 'proximity warning' for less then .. lets say 50 Meters.

It would make sense from a practical, realistic, idiot proof customer service point of view to include a large buffer zone around potentially dangerous hazards. Navigationally there's no reason you should ever be closer than 50m to an asteroid, so might as well make that and anything closer one blanket "BAD" setting on the display so the slower pilots of the future don't get mixed up.

The distance indicator uses the bounding sphere of the object. The bounding sphere is a sphere that is centered at the center of the object (where the radar blip is) and extends until the entire object is inside the sphere. For non-round objects this sphere is not very accurate but it is much much faster to calculate than the actual exact distance.

hmm I wonder if the read out could be changed somehow so it would not have to say 0m.

/me will think a bit for a better solution

How about "move away from the large object please" instead of 0m

Actually the distance indicatior doesnt register ships at all i thought.
