Attack of the Tornado Hornets

Mar 27, 2004 Arolte link
I saw a guy in sector 12 doing some crazy spins in his Hornet. The player's name was "muertemaya" and he was of Serco nation. Anyway, his Hornet was about 21km away from sector 5 wormhole and it was just going crazy. This is how it looked like...

Sorry for the language there. I also sound dorky 'cause I got a nasty cold right now. Anyway, you'll see the Hornet spinning like crazy with smoke spewing out of the fuselage. Take careful note of the particle smoke effects.

Okay, before I took this second video I bumped him to see whether his ship timed out or not. It didn't. I knew this because I managed to change the way his Hornet spun, as shown here. So clearly he hasn't lagged out in any way. 'Cause otherwise his ship would've been rock solid to me and I would've bounced back. He also remained in the sector for a good fifteen minutes, and remained there before I left. For all I know his Hornet is still spinning out of control.

And in the last video, pretty much the same thing. Except now you'll notice that the particle smoke is nearly all gone. A self-repairing Hornet that has a deadly tornado special attack? You decide. Nothing was edited here. I tried to contact the player multiple times to ask what was up, but he wouldn't respond. Anyway I think it wouldn't have mattered. He only spoke Spanish the one time I saw him chat.

EDIT: movies taken down to make room for more bug report movies (see below)

Ah, I remember trying to do the deadly sunflare spewing spinning death blossom from my hornet. I could never get myself spinning fast enough. He seems to have done it.

The combination is: up up down left right right L1 R2 right right R1 R1 L2

That's pretty interesting, a ship that acts like that, but doesn't time out. It's an omen! Run for the hills!

Maybe it's a joystick thing. You know how you have to keep calibrating it and stuff. Not sure. Wish he would've said something. That still doesn't explain the self-healing Hornet.

Hmm. That looks very similar to what happens when one contacts an object while dev-warping. It's not something that can be controlled, to the best of my knowledge. I wonder if this is related to the recent spate of loading screen bugs. Thanks for the video.

Did his health bar in the target info box actually go up? Your videos don't seem to show it.

Anyway, that's uh, pretty cool.

Naw, it was just the particle effects that vanished over time. You got a good point about the health bar though. I got a question. If I use /verbose 8 after the bug occurs, will it still record what happened previously? Or is all that stuff missed before? Damn, I wish I had done it during that time to see if the server still saw something weird.

Okay, I uploaded a few more movies of bugs I found. Most of them were already mentioned. Others aren't really bugs per se, but they're still interesting and were probably never meant to be done in the game. Okay here we go.

The first movie is of the notorious Logitech mouse autofire bug. It seems to affect the MX series of mice. Here you see me pressing the left thumb button to activate the bug. The only way to make it stop is to hit the left button once. It especially sucks when you're being chased or you're trying to chase someone down and you accidentally hit this button.

The second movie is a trick that lets you jump wormholes backwards. I use my ebrake key binding (backwards and brakes) to do this. If you time it so that you have such a sudden drop in deceleration, you can break the wormhole animation and get some goofy effects. You can jump a wormhole sideways, backwards, vertically, etc.

The third movie is the notorious nVidia bug that affects just about every game I own, thanks to Apple. The sun looks slightly jagged from far away, but when zoomed you notice severe pixelation along the edges. It's even worse with sector 10 because the sun graphic is scaled up, so you literally see these huge pixels just covering the entire background where the sun should be.

The last movie is the ghost trick that zamzx was talking about. You just drift your ship in space in front of an object, quit Vendetta, start it up again, and log on. If you timed it right you should start the game from inside that object. It's obviously an exploit, but I don't think it's so bad that it'll ruin gameplay completely. A few well placed sunflare should push the exploiter right out of the object or kill him.
