Grid Doesn't Prohibit Mounting
When playing unsubbed the game allows mounting of a weapon on a ship (in station) that exceeds grid, but doesn't allow for it's removal if station storage is maxed (i.e. unmounting requires paying crystals). This effectively bricks the ship if someone unwittingly exceeds the grid (and has their station storage maxxed, and has no crystals).
The game provides a popup when the grid is exceeded, but it's only for informational purposes and doesn't actually function as a stopgap, which, at least in the case of free play, it should.
Happy to post as a suggestion if this is intended design.

We are looking into this. It isn't exactly "intended design", it's more like an intersection of different things from different eras, pushed-together.
However, if we make grid a requirement of mounting, then everyone will have to equip a powercell before any addons can be placed. Currently, grid is a requirement of launching.
I don't fundamentally want to handle "grid" differently on different account classes. It's too basic of a concept.
We may just pop up an offer to sell the item / buy more crystal, or something along those lines.
