OS X FPS still sluggish?

Jan 16, 2004 Arolte link
Has the source of the memory leak or FPS droppage been located and fixed recently? With the latest version I'm still getting nearly single digits in sector 9. When I restart the game the problem goes away. What's up with this?

We haven't found any memory leak and don't know what's up with the crappy framerate either.

With rglow on my FPS fall drastically.

In s9, you're better off with rglow off and textures not set to Extremely High, 'cause the station's textures kill you with slowdown.

rglow slows down everyone. That's because it does something like 21 passes. With that much raw data flying around, you need to expect a serious slowdown.

I've never played with rglow. I know it kills FPS rates. I play with high texture settings and I get about 50 FPS on average. Sector 9 is the only one that acts up for some reason. All the other ones run fine. Sometimes sector 5 does too when you line up the two stations and the asteroid field.

I thought Eldrad or someone else was going around taking FPS graph tests of each sector. Didn't he find that FPS rates dove while standing still and having some other player enter the sector or something? What happened to those results? Were they inconclusive or was that problem fixed?

I *sometimes* get really bad frame rates in both s9 and s10, they can get as low as 5fps in s9 , but slightly better in s10. This is strange, because it seams completely random.

Sometimes I'll start vendetta and s10 will be the first sector i go to and the fps will bomb, if I exit back to s7 they are fine, back to s10 and they bomb again. The only thing that fixes this is quitting and restarting vendetta.

*bump*

I haven't played in months now but recently I got back into the Vendetta scene and found that this bug for the OS X client remains. Unfortunately it seems to be getting worse. Performance becomes drastically crippled in large sectors like s9 and s5. Bug report submitted.

If anyone else has similar problems please post any helpful information you can find. The only thing I was able to make out of it was that it was a cummulative effect rather than a spontaneous one, which leads me to believe that it's a memory leak that occurs while loading sectors.

We still haven't be able to figure it out. Vendetta doesn't leak memory.
If anyone else with the same problem post their cpu speed/video card/OS version maybe we can see some commonality.

Got your e-mail, thanks. Looks like Apple is slacking behind on graphics driver updates. It's been so long now I don't get why they haven't seen it yet. Maybe I should just reformat my harddrive and reinstall Jagquar instead of Panther.

Arolte I kept putting up the info I gathered... and since a1k0n has said that he still hasn't been able to find the issue. I found a temp solution of turning off the doshaders, doindexbuffers and dovertexbuffers. It's annoying but gets rid of the problem.

OS X 10.3.3 doesn't fix anything. In fact Apple yanked the OpenGL and ATI/nVidia updates from the final update. The ADC version had 'em though, which is why you may have seen rumors about new graphics drivers in this update. Who knows, they may release it as its own update soon, or they might decide to wait two or three months to release it in the next update. Let's hope it's the former of the two.

Eldrad, I have shaders turned off already. The game is unplayable on my system with it on for some reason. Turning doindexbuffers and dovertexbuffers off decreases performance for me drastically. That's definitely not something I want to turn off. I don't think having an average initial framerate of 15 FPS is any better than one that drops down to 15 FPS over a period of time.

Before the update that "made fps better" I would get avg 24 fps looking at sector 9 station with graphics really high, now i get like 8 avg with graphics a lot lower....

Arolte, it gives me a slight hit in performance as well, but is still playable. The problem with what happens with them on is that the average fps is a lot higher than the min. It tends to have pretty extreme dips that only last for 1 frame... but still make playing very difficult.
