Select == Buyback?
Whenever I dock and try to select a ship, the "Buy Back last Ship" option appears. I did not die, just dock. This happens to me in every sector, wiht pings under 100. Clicking "Yes" buys the ship that you were attempting to select. Clicking "No" allows you to select the ship as normal. If you try to select a ship without an engine and/or battery, then click yes at buyback, the game crashes and when you log back in you have an engine/battery that you didn't pay for.
I'm confused.
When you press the "Select Ship" button in the station menu you get the buyback question instead?
Or do you get into the ship select menu fine and when you actually try selecting a new ship it goes to the buyback question instead of going into the station panel?
What happens if you press Cancel in the ShipSelect menu instead of selecting a ship? What happens if you select the same ship you already have selected?
Do you get m_waiting messages in your console?

The menu opens fine, but when I try to select a ship it goes to the buyback question instead of station panel.
When I press Cancel on ShipSelect, it goes away. When I select the same ship I already have, it offers to buy me another copy of that ship. I get no m_waiting messages.

I've gotten this once or twice before, generally from clicking too quickly (I can't replicate it, however).
If I dock, and click select ship, the buy-back menu comes up. I haven't clicked "yes" though, so I can't vouch for what rogue said.

So to make sure I have this straight, SirCamps, you get the buyback menu instead of the ship select menu?
So there's two bugs... Even more interesting, this didn't happen to me at all last night. I went on last night late and played for awhile, no buyback bug. Strange as can be
It happened to me in sector 11, after I was killed in 3/6 by NPCDEF, I wanted to get back into the action quickly, so I breezed through all the menus. I hit the "select ship" at the bottom of the station menu.
Yes, Ray. It's happened two or three times.
Once it happened like I described below.
A second time happened when I died, clicked "no" on buyback. I scroll through my ships quickly and got the wrong one. When I clicked "select ship" again, the buyback menu came up.

It happened to me in 9 and 10.
Ok now, that second time you described is't supposed to be able to happen. When you first get the buyback question, it sets a flag telling it not to come up again while you're still inside the station. So if it's coming up a second time while you're still inside the station without leaving or logging off it can't come up again.
When did that happen and what sector were you in?
Another thing, when you said you pressed "select ship" you mean the "Select Ship..." button in the main station menu? or do you mean the "Select" button in the ship select panel?
