When returning from UIT space, you can outrun the escorted ship by jumping to different sectors, then go to Edras I-2, kill the Serco attackers without any hassle (they are basically just sitting there, easily killed from behind) and then dock at the station WITHOUT the escorted ship, which happily thanks you even though you you didn't escort it there at all.
