Vendetta 1.8.408 crashes on Linux x86-64
I was playing for hours last weekend on this same system. I haven't even rebooted it, let alone updated any packages.

Which video driver do you usually use? The OpenGL Reference or the OpenGL 4 one?
GL4
Can you email me your opengl4info.log please? The bug reporter hasn't been updated to send that along with the rest of the log files.
My Vendetta Client crashes as soon as it starts after the update screen. I returned the first bug report and cancelled the rest.

More information.
I have sent you logs. I also tried on my other laptop (same OS) and it fails there as well.
With Windows 7 the game starts just fine.

We're working on a fix, in the mean time, try switching back to the OpenGL Reference GKGL driver by editing your config.ini and edit your VideoDriver setting in the [Vendetta] section to this or adding it if it is not present:
VideoDriver=OpenGL Reference GKGL driver
VideoDriver=OpenGL Reference GKGL driver
My client is working since I switched to the Reference driver by editing config.ini.
We released a .1 patch that temporarily disables GL4 support on systems that don't have GL 3.1 or better. We will eventually add support for the ARB_draw_instanced extension, but it's not a top priority right now.
At least the game won't crash anymore.

New shaders for the Capella broke something?
My card (BARTS) is supposed to have support for OpenGL 3.3, according to this: https://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/#note_19

Mine's still crashing later on when it switches to refgl. At least I get the Guild Software logo and loading screen now.

I am crashing in the same manner, have tried every driver including ref.
Try changing the driver in config.ini - change the 4 to Reference
In the past each time I tried to switch to the Reference driver in game my client would trap.
With this failure I made the change in config.ini and was able to run the game.

Still crashing once I pick a char and start rendering the sector, changed to the ref drive in game and in config.
Does this happen with all of your characters every time?
Yes.
