Windows RT
Hey I noticed that when I run VO on my surface, it disconnects me from the server when I switch to a different app (specifically if I swipe from the left) equivalent to ALT+Enter in normal (Real) windows. So when I return to VO im looking at the start screen and I have to enter my login info again. interestingly I just now noticed that switching to the desktop IE from the game has caused no issues. hmmm.
And yes I have slapped myself a few times for not getting the win8 version of the surface.
*edit wait disregard that, ("I just now noticed that switching to the desktop IE from the game has caused no issues.") it disco'd me sfter all. got a server timed out prompt.

That's a "feature" of Windows RT. It disconnects any app from the networking stack if you spend 30 seconds in another app. So, multitasking with any serious networking application is basically impossible.
There's a very simplistic "web networking" API that can "survive" in the background, which is useful if you're making a facebook app or some such, but it's no help to us, with our level of proprietary protocols.

Is this also a "feature" of iOS? I get this same problem on my iPad I can be playing and accidentally hit home key, reopen VO and i'm logged out.
Yes, it is. Although it takes a minute on iOS, as opposed to 30 seconds on WinRT (if I remember correctly).
Android is the only mobile OS, of the three, that allows background apps to stay networked.. or even better, lets an app to switch to a "low-power with networking" mode when the device sleeps. So we can detach the renderer and shut down physics completely on Android, but still keep the app fundamentally alive, connected and up to date over the network. Because of this I can "sleep" my Android tablet, running the game, leave it on the couch overnight, and pick it up the next day and it'll still be connected to the game with current chat, but without having inordinately killed the battery.

It's basically a different outlook. Apple has always come from the position of trying to "protect" their users by being militant about what you can and cannot do (for instance, you can't run down the user's battery with a backgrounded app).
Android is protective to some extent (they will kill backgrounded apps if resource limited, or pop up a notice if one uses a lot of battery), but give developers a lot more freedom. It's not as guaranteed to be "safe", but it allows for a lot more application flexibility.
Microsoft basically emulated the Apple way of doing things, and it has a lot in common with what they chose to do on Xbox and Windows Phone (lock down everything as much as possible).
It's tough to find fault with the "Apple Way" (from the perspective of an OS vendor like Microsoft) when Apple continues to make hilarious amounts of money. The difference in capabilities and application-possibilities aren't really apparent to the end-user, as of yet.

Sometimes i've found i can get away with a couple minutes too, probably a combination of the iPad cut off and a timeout value on the VO servers which I must return in time for Because i'll switch between VO and Remoter Pro (my ssh client to my IRC box) and chat on vo/irc as I would on the PC/Mac
Wow, thanks incarnate I just learned a lot here, ok here's another one I noticed on RT.
When I use a usb mouse, (Logitech G series) on the surface, it works perfectly well on VO as long as I have mouselook ON (the ship sways a little when I change direction but that's tolerable.). I also go into the options menu and check the keyboard/mouse box under the input settings, though I cant find any mouse adjustments as far as sensitivity, but once im flying and I turn mouselook off, the mouse is almost unresponsive. sluggish would be an understatement, the ships response is almost comatose :)
I was thinking about trying a workaround once I find out the console command that controls mouse sensitivity, but I haven't dug that far yet.

"Apple continues to make hilarious amounts of money"
Most of their "hilarious" money making comes through social manipulation marketing rather than actual technological innovation.
It's a clever mix and they have done a lot for access to technology, but they've also made themselves fabulously rich by exploiting some pretty ugly cultural values like elitism and social envy. I mean they applaud people when they buy their first mac for god sake and say "Welcome to the Apple family" it's disgusting.
Hilarious is definitely not the word for it, but I know what you mean.
